Can someone tell me what the open coop method is?

I know that there are a couple people here in San Diego that have open coops, it just doesn't get that cold here. I still like to give my girls the ability to get completely inside from the out doors and to keep preditors out. They have a small inclosed run they can hang out in if it gets too warm in the summer and then they have the whole backyard that they free range in.

Wow that's nice! Neat construction!

I'm no where near that skilled, I went with a REALLY simple design but I absolutely LOVE it! I wouldn't recommend it for really cold climates unless you like the look of tarps

We did have single digits and wind chills to -15 earlier this year though. No one suffered too much. I "winterized" with a tarp and 75watt lamp to knock the windchill out, but normally they do well in our typical-range of 20-30*F winter nghts without any extra help.

Here's mine https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=27985-open-air-design-coop

WOW!! nice open air coop! I am so jealous...even the nest bucket stand is quality craftsmanship! Very simple yet functional and hardly an eyesore. I Want One:(

Here is my open air coop - its closes to keep preditors out at night but only had 3 sides - in winter I put the piece of ply wood in front of the roost to try and stop the wind getting in as much and 2 extra peices of corrigatred iron on the roof for mpore protection from the rain and wind.

and here it is with the ply and extra iron on for winter

yeah...I would think when you get that crazy side ways rain and wind going on...your chickies would be soaking ringing wet! Just me??? I my tractors have openings for the chickens to come in and out of the nesting box but other than the little cut out door the rest in completely enclosed. I also add temp. drop cloths/tarps to the roofs of my A frame tractors for the winter weather. My other chickies free range but sleep in a barn and so far so good. I like my chickies snuggy and warm and secure at night!....I've just experienced too many ringing wet chickie rescues to go this route! Ideally it's nice to have a walk in barn to collect your eggs...makes it nice for you on rainy cold days and for the chicks too! Just my two cents!
