well, I've been lurking around here for a few days, and reading so much that my eyes are about to fall out of my head !
So I thought that I'd post up some pics of my newly built pen, and see what you all think, or can suggest.

I do not have any birds yet, due to I still need to build a coop inside the pen, and I will welcome all suggestions.

The pen is 12' wide x 24' long with 6 1/2' tall walls. It is located in the rear corner of my back yard, at the far end of the veggie garden, and is boardered by block walls at 7'and 8' tall, along 2 sides.
(5' away from each of the block walls).

Roof joyces are up, door frame is in...

2 solid coats of waterproofing stain, and the wire is going up...

End caps are on, door is built and hung, tarpover rear half is up,
(I eventually will replace the tarp with some of the plastic corregated panels, but I'm already over budget as it is !)...

Inside pic with a "temporary test resident", LOL!,
just behind the concrete block in the floor, is a water spigot that I'm hoping will come in handy for an automatic waterer...

I'm open to suggestions on coop sizes, design and deminsions, and have been looking at the many pics of your different coops.
My hopes are to have 6 to 8 laying hens, ( I haven't decided what breeds yet but want Large eggs).
the coop will probably also have a set of upper and lower nesting boxes, because I eventually, (later, but not right now), would like to have about a dozen Tumbler pigeons just for fun. I like the idea of having a homegrown daredevil airshow on the weekends, LOL!

I am also hoping to have a few pheasants if the pens 'Real Estate" will allow for them.
I'm thinking a ringneck roo with a couple of hens, and maybe even a set of Red Goldens too.

Eventually down the road, there may be a Quail house added to the mix, but that will have to remain a "rear burner" idea for now. Maybe next year.
I don't want to throw too much in there at once.

Although I am a newbie, it's not my first time to be around birds.
When I was a kid, my buddy I grew up with had a large flight pen/coops, and we had/raised everything listed above, and even more.
I look forward to sharing those same experiences with my own kids who are now 8 and 10 years old, and I feel that these experiences are good life skills training.

so please chime in with your suggestions, and experiences, and I will be adding to this thread as we progress with the building.
Thanks ! and happy birding !!!

If you are only looking at 6-8 hens, you have way more room than you really need, especially if you are going to let them range in the rest of your yard. And you only need a couple of nest boxes for that many, so you have given yourself many options. You have a great start with the space you have created and the direct source for fresh water close by is wonderful. There are numerous coop designs to look at on the coops section on this forum. Sky is the limit for your venture with the chickens, and you have left yourself room for the other fancies you want.
Good luck.

I guess I didn't specify this, but the birds will not be allowed to roam the veggie garden, or the rest of the yard either.
They will all be confined to the 12' x 24' pen at all times.
Although I'm sure that my 2 bird dogs, (1 Yellow Lab, and 1 Brittany Spaniel), would just LOVE to have them running around the yard, LOL!

as far as the nesting boxes for the Chickens are concerned, am I mistaken in thinking, that each Chicken should have it's own nesting box? or do they "share" nesting boxes?

also, is it a bad idea for the coop itself to have a wire floor, with a poop tray down below?
I ask this in reguards to the coop being "drafty", as opposed to a solid floor and less drafty. (but naturally harder to keep clean).

Hey Tri!

Yay another "farmish" OC person! LOL
Good job! That' actually is a bit like I hope mine comes out (8x 16). Mine is about half built and I already have 5 chickens impatiently waiting on me to finish their "big pen". I got 4 eggs today and I'm a happy lady! You'll love chickens!

Did you use treated lumber for the bottom part? I wonder how that stain will hold up. I got some thompsons water seal cedar color on friday...

Super run! Very pretty! They will share nest boxes, so three would be plenty for 6-8 hens. I would definitely go through the coop pages (medium) to find something that suits you. I'm not sure about a wire bottom; I think that would be rough on their feet. I have seen wire used over a "dropping pit" under the roosts, but it wasn't for walking around on. I'm guessing you guys keep mild weather year round??? If so a dropping pit would work. Good luck...looks like you're doing a great job so far!

Nice big run!

My only suggestion at this time is preditor proofing. I don't know if, or what preditors you may have in Orange County, but if their are raccoons, you may want to bury some wire around the run. The theory is that a critter will dig under, but if they hit wire they don't know to back up to miss the wire. I only have about six inches of wire burried around my run, I think maybe I should have gone a little bigger. Just a suggestion. You don't want your chickens to become some critter's dinner.

The recommendation is to have a minimum of 4 square feet per chicken on the inside of the closed in coop (not the pen), so if you aim at 40 square feet, you should have plenty of room. That pen is really beautiful. Your chickens will be livin' in style.

I would definitely steer away from the wire bottom. It's a nice idea to have the poop just dropping down conveniently. Something under the roosts to catch a large percentage of the poop is a great idea, but not for where they walk

Now that I'm not feeling like a smarty pants........

It is a really nice run.

I agree on the droppings board under the roosts. I don't have one in my current coop, but I will be adding one in the next coop I'm building. Most of their poop in the coop is at night. So if you have a droppings board, you don't have to clean the coop shavings as much. Just scrape the droppings into a bucket.

The only other thing I can think of is for egg collection. You are going to be walking into the coop (thus stepping in poo, you can try to avoid it, but you'll still step in some) to collect your eggs. I think it's probably too late at this point, but it's nice to be able to collect eggs without going into the run.

Well we made a little progress this weekend, but not alot.
Started on the coop part of the bird pen, and got the munchkins involved a little too...

here's my ugly mug, figuring out the coop floor...

IMG_0954.jpg

Finally got the flooring squared away. No small task, considering that I have built 90% of this pen with re-cycled materials. seems nothing is square, straight, or true. Trying to convince a square floor into a less than square took a little "convincing"...

getting the munchkins involved with a little painting...

floor is in, and ready to figure out the floorplan layout.
any help, ideas, or suggestions on this, will be appreciated...

I am trying to recycle as much materials as possible, and am intending on using these old plastic sheets as the side walls to the coop.
as well, I will be making a full coverage, removable , floor liner, poop board liners, nesting box liners, etc,
in the intrest of simplified clean up. Hopefully this will be effective towards sanitation also.

In these pics, the panels are shown going all the way to the ground. This is only a mock-up for the pic, and will be flush to the raised floor, (18" off the ground), when permanately installed to the framing that I still need to build...

IMG_0969.jpg

I have seen some coop pics, where others have used a plastic tub/bin as the nesting boxes.
I kind of like this idea, and belive this will aid in quicker clean-ups.
Does anyone have any comments on this ?
Does it work well to help promote a sanitary environment ?
Also,
What is the recommended dimentions for nesting boxes for standard sized birds?
And how far should the nesting boxes be rasied, above the floor of the coop ?
I am consideing a plastic box similar to this...
