I posted a couple of weeks ago about my sick americauna. I though she had cocci even though it's rare in a 6.5 month old hen. She appeared to get much better and I put her back in with the flock last week. Well yesterday she keeled over and died. Luckily we have a farm animal lab in town and they did the necropsy today. She died from swallowing a ROOFING NAIL ! Evidently a while back because her body had formed a bunch of black tissue around it. I know I scoured the ground for nails and screws after the coop construction but I obviously didn't get them all. I am just kicking myself for letting this happen! I have another hen who almost died last week from eating a bunch of straw. Chickens will eat anything! Learn from my mistakes people !

Wow...so sorry. We do a lot of building projects around our place, and that worry has been in my head too. I'll tell you...you can spend 30 minutes scouring the ground for screws and other tiny objects that you don't want your chickens picking up, and it takes them 2 seconds to find the one in a hundred you missed. I'm glad you found out what the problem was though...I would hate not knowing.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! That is wild. I wish I had a place like that around here that could tell me what happened to some of mine.

Very interesting.... Thanks for sharing!

I know it stinks to loose them. I have lost 3 of my lil 2 month olds and I don't understand it.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but thank-you very much for the heads up! I will be building a coop this spring and now will be very careful regarding all screws, nails etc. Thank-you!

Nothing else you could have done for her...

chickens sure WILL eat anything! Someone posted an x-ray of a chicken who had eaten a screw a year or so back...it was a good-sized screw at that!

I'm very sorry for your loss, but don't blame yourself! Sounds like you did your very best to make sure all the debris was removed before your chooks moved in.

My FIL, who's a contractor, got me into the habit of sweeping the work area with a magnet after building or dismantling something. It's a habit he's picked up from one to many trips to the ER w/ a nail through someone's boot. He always carries a very large magnet mounted on a broom handle in his work truck.

i'll second that 'holy toledo' and add...geez sorry. every loss is hard. at least you know there isnt some awful disease floating around?

hugs
