Is anyone on here from the Prescott area of Michigan?

Dhs parents live in that area, and we are looking at very possibly transplanting ourselves near them in a year or so.
A little house, possibly a barn, 10 plus acres is what are looking at.
And if we can do it mortgage free that would be a plus, even though we will have very little to start out with.

We want roo to free range chickens, forage goats, and have a massive garden so as to live sustainably.

So talk to me. What do you see in this area that would make this possible?

I am not orginally from MI, but we live not too far from Flint. I'm not familar with the other areas. You might want to pop into the MI thread and ask some folks there.

Someone there will surely know the areas, and be able to help ya out.

We just moved to Livingston County area, and love it. We are in a lovely farm and agricultural area. We have one neighbor who just bought the horse ranch next to us. ( the same time we bought our old 110 year old farmhouse. )The other house his parents live in, and we couldn't ask for better neighbors. We free range our birds, a huge shared garden is being started this year for all of us, and I plan on getting a couple goats soon also.

I noticed you were in Alaska, and I have been there too. My Dad was stationed there for 12 years, and it was one of his top favorite places to live.

( The other was Korea) I love snow so Alaska was always a beautiful place for me.

As for Michigan, I lived in a lot of places. Other than where I was born it is one of my favorite States. It has water, it has great forests, places to explore, and snow

I know it's not doing well economically, but things like that don't last forever. In my opinion, the state as whole outweighs all the things going on right now.

So, all in all, come on over. There's a bunch of us who'd be happy to welcome you.

This is one I was considering for the wife and I, but as much as I want to move to a house with more bedrooms, this one is just outside my price range for being self employed.

Basic features
Built in 1870 and move in ready.
6 bedrooms
3 bathrooms
basement
10 acres w/ barn

not being able to prove a stable income I can't consider it, but it's nice

We have been talking more about what exactly to do.
Ideally, we would do this mortgage free.
Dhs parents are very near Prescott, on lots of family land.
We seriously want to build a Nebraska straw bale house. Ranch style. These homes have an R-value of 50-70, and cost very little to build.
We would build on the family land, and farm it with and for the parents.
There is more then enough room for a couple of grass fed beef cattle, and 2-3 grassfed milk cows. Cow shares anyone?
As well as plenty of true pastured egg and meat chickens.
The huge gardens they already have, would just be expanded.
And we would put in a real root cellar, pantry style.
I know in the old falling down house, there is an old wood cookstove.
I would love to find a restorer, so that could be used.

We want to be mortage free.
We want to live sustainably, and be truly set apart and self sufficient as far as our living conditions are concerned.
This would allow us to live on very little income, something that is impossible in Alaska.
We are also the only family that can uproot ourselves and pitch in to help the parents as they age.

I live the next town south of Prescott, (Paula check your PMs). I would love to have someone else from this forum live near me! Prescott area, southern Ogemaw county, has decent farmland. It's mainly a dairy area and as such, the laws protect the established dairy farmers. Cow shares are sort of legal in Michigan. My neighbor and I can hook you up with goats and I know some horse people in the area. get your chicks at Miller Feeds on M-55. Property is VERY cheap in Michigan right now. There's a house between mine and Prescott (Alger mailing address) that is 20 acres, pole barn for horses, equipment shed, chicken coop and run, hayfields & 4 bedroom house for $75,000. The husband got a job in Lousiana and they had to move last year, no hits on the house yet.

Any Q's PM or email. I can give you a verbal tour of the area

BTW, if you move here, your congressman is in the Upper Peninsula, and Northeastern Michigan has the highest regional unemployment in the US (just so you know what you're getting into--jobs are VERY tight here. I am underemployed as are quite a few other people).

Jobs should not be a huge problem. We will not have a mortgage, if all goes well.
DH is a butcher and a fly fishing guide, as well as a good all around whatever he needs to be. We don't need much.
We will be talking to the parents soon, to let them know the possible plan.
The desire is for the land (35 acres) to stay in the family, so it will be ideal to build on their land, and help them through their senior years.

I would love to get traditional food and self sufficient living classes going at some point if we do this, and after we get settled.
Ever seen this families site?
