So this story is via my husband who has been working at home. We have two Rhode Island Reds who are just over a year old. They free-range in our back yard when one of us is home. About 10 am this morning, my husband heard a pertty persistant and loud knocking at the glass door to the deck (the girls do come up to visit occainsionally, but don't peck at the door usually). My husband came out to find one of the two girls (Foghorn) at the door really knocking at it with her beak. He heard some loud squaking coming from the coop and run area and went outside to see what the other was up to. What he found was a neighborhood cat who was IN the run with our second RIR (Leghorn). The cat ran off when he showed up, but WOW! I can't help but think that Foghorn came to the door to say "get your butt out here, Leghorn's in trouble!!"

Have you ever experienced anything like this? I'm amazed!

I have to add that window knocking has suddenly become in vogue here, but it's the Robins pecking at our windows. They're starting to nest in our trees and I think they see their reflection and think it's an intruder. Anyhow, we're learning to ignore the knocking, but the chicken knocking was apparently much louder and more persistant.

I have never had anything like that happen, but it is absolutely amazing! What a smart chicken you have.

That is so cute! Our girls peck on their window from the roost when Laura and I are outside after dark BBQing or what have you. They are such spoiled babies I dont doubt they would be at the back door with the 138lb lab trying to come inside like the little begging vagrants they are!

Their decision to come get momma when danger presented itself is amazing though! When they are scared our birds just run into their coop and peak out the door. You must be so proud of them!

My chicks are only a few weeks old but when I take them outside and they hear a startling noise they run straight to me. The first two will fuss when I put them in the brooder but then the next two try to find me so I can pick them up to go in too. Otherwise, though don't seem to very interested in me.

That's so cool ( & funny!) I can just imagine that bird thinking, "Holy Crow!!! I gotta go get Dad!!!" & banging on the door!

I'm glad she was such a smarty & saved her buddy! Thanks for sharing such a cute story that just goes to prove what we BYC folks already know - CHICKENS RULE!!!

That is a great story. I think chicken intelligence is WAY underrated. Good for your girl!
