Okay, do you think these two issues are related?

Yesterday, I found a humongous egg from one of my barred rocks. The egg was twice the size of the regular large eggs that my hens give.

Just noticed today that one of my barred rocks had a HUGE clump of poop/mud-looking BLECH hanging off her butt. I took her over to the hose, and washed the area. I had to cut with scissors part of her feathers because the clump of mess wouldn't come off with just water (oh, and that mess STUNK!). I rinsed again, and while there is a bit of redness below her vent, her vent is clear and clean now.

She is acting normal otherwise.

Does it sound like she had something crazy going on with her laying?

Whew! When I read CUT I thought you might have cut a prolapse that came after laying a large egg! I am relieved that everything looks normal after cleaning her up! As long as she looks normal I would just watch her. Was it a double yolker? They say that you should look at what happened in the hen's life 3 days before an unusual egg was laid to get an idea of why. Terri O

LOL about the cutting... yeah, nothing red was in that pile of muck... She did have some redness below her vent though - not sure if it was irritation from carrying around a heavy mess on her hind end or if there was some sort of sore. I'll check again tomorrow as she really was done with me having got her with the hose and such.... lol!

I have a hen who often lays double yolk eggs. It is usually when she did not lay the day before...if you can tell when she layed or didn't lay last, that will likely help you know what went on with her laying. Could she have layed a shelless egg and that is what was stuck on her backside?

hey it's me again. here are the pics of my chicken that sounds like she has the same problem:

I've been told it's vent gleet, but it's hard and really hard to get off and so stinky, it can knock you over! I tried treating her for vent gleet, but I didn't see much difference and she eventually died.... but here's the link to vent gleet help site anyway:http://ultimatefowl.atwiki.com/page/Vent Gleet

Thanks so much for letting me know what this is. I'm not sure if it is vent gleet or not. I did read that they can get sores around their butt when they have diarrhea in general. She has a white sore, but her vent looks healthy (not red) just red underneath it... I'm going to look again today - I may go ahead and treat her like it's vent gleet if it isn't looking any better. I'm also going to go ahead and give them yogurt - didn't really think about it before about the probiotics... I should do that all the time!
