I tried wiring the thermostat to the light socket, but apparently I'm dimwitted when it comes to reading diagrams. I used one I saw on here, but guess I did it wrong. I plugged it in and got a huge zap! The plug melted a little and I don't know if everything else got fried in the process.

If the plug melted a little you will want to get a new plug. All sorts of wonky things happen when they melt.

Hope you are okay. Electricity is scary!

Id go get another stat/cord and try again . . .
Way cheaper.

Remember- brass to brass when making your connections, and the silver go to silver.

I followed the diagram, and it works perfectly.
All your trying to do is add the bulb inline with the power wire.

Wiring-
1-Cord from wall should have hot wire to #1 on stat(hot wire should always be copper)
2-Ground wire goes to silver screw on light fixture.(ground wire should be silver, but can be copper also, dependin on what kinda cord used))
3-Then, just run a short jumper wire from the #2 on stat to the brass screw on light.

Its very simple, tho the diagram can be confusing if your not electrically inclined . . .

Imo, if you got shocked, its more likely you have wires touching each other somewhere, as compared to wired wrong which should only kick the breaker and turn the circuit off.
But, it still COULD happen just being wired wrong.

If you have plugs in your home that zap and melt plastic/cords, thats not good(incubator wired wrong or not), the breakers shouldnt let that happen, they should kick off immediately.

Good luck, and dont give up.

I had a hard time finding the right thermostat and found it at the plumbing supply store. After signing my name on the credit card receipt I realized I just paid $30.00 for the stupid thing!

I hope it's not busted! I'll let my dh have a look when he gets home today. He's great at electrical stuff. Just thought if he could do it, I could too. Guess I was wrong!

Check out this link. She has written instructions that I followed.

I got mine at Lowe's, I think it was less than 9.00. Home Depot should have them as well. I saw the bottle lamp kit at Walmart.

I did mine without DH, this time I just wanted it to be MY project, but that is just a "me" thing. I plugged mine into an outlet that was a GFI so if I did it wrong it would trip the breaker and not bite me.

Like Babsbag just said, go to lowes or HD and look in the aisle that has the water heaters.
They are about $8 or so.

I wish I still had the package to show.
Get the cheapest one, should look like a little brown box with a red dial and 2 screws.
