I don't have any silkies, but I've read about young ones like yours "adopting" chicks before. It seems like they truly are broody machines and love to have something to mother. Looking forward to the pictures.

How did you figure out the hen wanted to mother ?! Do you just put her in with the chicks and see what happens ??? Was she broody ?? I have my first silkies, and want to get more in the spring ...... GREAT info !!!

Love the pics, Thanks for posting them!!

ETA: My 10 year old son looked at the pics too and now he says we have to get silkies too...DH will not be happy, but then again I snuck a peachick in awhile back and it was two months old when he noticed that it was a funny looking turkey.

I take care of and buy everything for the birds so he doesn't have much to say about it unless I need to bring something into the house--I figure he should have a vote there since the noise and mess when that happens is something we all have to deal with.

Awww!! These pictures brought tears to my eyes. We had a pretty white silkie that really didn't fit in with the other chickens. She was almost 4 months old and did the same thing. She brooded 12 chicks and 4 baby peachicks. We were so excited for her to have babies of her own. Sadly, she was killed by a nasty daschund before she could even lay her first egg. We miss her very much. She started our love for silkies, but we will never find one like her. It looks like you are going to have a sweet little bird!! Thanks for sharing your pictures!

That is so cute. I keep looking for signs of maternal love in my two silkies (22 weeks old), but alas, I'm sure I have the world's only non-maternal silkies.
