Is it possible to create Double-Laced Cochins WITHOUT out-crossing to another breed? If I'm interpreting my books correctly, the pattern progression goes something like this:

1) start with Pg (Pattern Gene) . . . this is the 'Partridge' variety (or 'Pencilled' in Silver)
2) to Pg, add Ml (Melanizer/Melanotic Gene) . . . now you have 'Double-Laced'
3) to Pg+Ml, add Co (Columbian Gene) . . . now you have 'Single Laced' (either 'Gold Laced' or 'Silver Laced')

So, if we already have (again in Cochins) both Partridge and Gold Laced, and Pencilled and Silver Laced, how do we stop the gene progression at step #2 - Double-Laced? How do we add in Melanizer without Columbian, or how do we subtract Columbian out of the equation?

And, as Partridge and Pencilled both start on different e-alleles, would the steps be any different to achieve Gold Double-Laced vs. Silver Double-Laced?

Simple.

Cross pencilled with single laced. The F1 are het columbian Co/co+.

Cross F1 to pencilled will give you 50% co+/co+ and some of these have 1 copy of Ml (Pg-Ml/Pg-ml+). About 25%.
I hope they are distinguishable though.
Interbreed these to get purebreed Pg-Ml/Pg-Ml co+/co+ = double laced. About 25%

You could also interbreed the F1.
You get way less co+/co+ but you could get some Pg-Ml/Pg-Ml co+/co+ straight away. About 6.25 %

And, as Partridge and Pencilled both start on different e-alleles

Incorrect ,in Cochins,Brahmas & Wyandottes which have black tails both colours are based on Brown eb. eb/eb Pg/Pg Co/Co Ml/Ml
In Sebrights & Polands which have laced tails are Birchen based, Co is replaced by Dark Brown Db, eb/eb Pg/Pg Db/Db Ml/Ml

Double laced are Standardised colours in Double Laced Barnevelders & Dark Indian (Cornish) Game

Thank you for pointing out my error - I'm not sure why I wrote that - I do know that Cochins have solid tails and are eb, while Sebrights have laced tails are are ER.

What I meant to ask, and hopefully I'll get it correct this time, is there any difference in the steps outlined by Henk when working with eb based on S (sex-linked Silver, i.e. Pencilled and Silver Laced) versus eb based on s+ (red/gold, i.e. Partridge and Gold Laced)?

It all sounds simple enough as Henk explained it, although something tells me that while it may be simple, it's probably not that easy, or we'd see it being done. I think crossing until the Co is recessive co is going to be simple compared to keeping the appearance of quality lacing.

The steps would be the same for silver or gold unless you want to work with gold pencilled and silver single laced or vice versa.
Then you have to take into account the sexlinked silver/gold gene...

If you keep to one groundcolor you'll be fine.
