Is it possible to create Double-Laced Cochins WITHOUT out-crossing to another breed? If I'm interpreting my books correctly, the pattern progression goes something like this:
1) start with Pg (Pattern Gene) . . . this is the 'Partridge' variety (or 'Pencilled' in Silver)
2) to Pg, add Ml (Melanizer/Melanotic Gene) . . . now you have 'Double-Laced'
3) to Pg+Ml, add Co (Columbian Gene) . . . now you have 'Single Laced' (either 'Gold Laced' or 'Silver Laced')
So, if we already have (again in Cochins) both Partridge and Gold Laced, and Pencilled and Silver Laced, how do we stop the gene progression at step #2 - Double-Laced? How do we add in Melanizer without Columbian, or how do we subtract Columbian out of the equation?
And, as Partridge and Pencilled both start on different e-alleles, would the steps be any different to achieve Gold Double-Laced vs. Silver Double-Laced?
