nest boxes

There are bunches of pics of them in the coop section, this section. You can use most anything you have -- 5 gal pail, milk crate, kitty litter box, old dresser drawer, even a cardboard box -- whatever. I never buy nest boxes. They can be open or closed on the top, and they can be intended for one or a group of chickens.

I don't own a camera or fool with pics or I'd show you my setup.

You want a free way for nest boxes? Go to the USPS.com and order some large flat rate boxes. Get as many as you want/can. I ended up doing that for shipping reasons and put in too many...and...well, lets just say my Mom was like "WHAT did you DO?!" and my chickens have a new nest box every three days, all set for a year or two. LOL! When I got the boxes, they were free. I am not 100% sure they are still doing that, but, it's worth a check!

Hi 7L,
I think we replied to each other in the "egg waiting" post. I was looking for someone who can maybe help answer another question for me. I love your nesting boxes! Mine are similar but have a top on them. I actually found 2 tall skinny book shelves and turned them sideways. They work great!! And even though I dont have many laying right now, alot of my hens are laying them and doing the nesting thing. So i know they are comfy. But, I do have some younger hens and roo's who are roosting on the board running across the front, bottom of the nest. Which, is really discusting because I have to clean them out constantly and then after they poop in them the hens are not wanting to go in. So they are all scrambling for one up top in a corner. Do you have any ideas that might help to keep them from roosting there???

thanks!!

Great idea!! I see your liter board just under the roosting bar. Do they there? Is it easy to keep clean. Finishing up 2nd coop today and putting in boxes and roosting areas. Trying to get ideas, so i dont have same issues as with the 1 i have now.

Poop boards work great. I just scrape it off once a week into a plastic container, add more shavings and done. It takes a total of 5 minutes to clean, feed & water the girls. Now, if they would just start laying me some eggs, I would be as happy as they are...lol
