So I look out my window and did not see any of my chickens out in their pen, then I see this large bird that I know is not a chicken ready to walk into the coop thru the small door. I ran down into the yard and for sure it is a huge red tail hawk! I called my brother in law to come help me coax him out because the top of the run has strong deer netting stretched across the entire top and is secured with zip ties. I also grabbed my camera in case I have to end up documenting a "problematic hawk" because he is always trying to get in there after them and has killed a lot of my free range birds. Then I see he has already killed and ate my tiny serama roo! He kept flying back and forth trying to get out the way he must have gotten in but would only end up getting caught up in the netting upside down. My brother in law got here and as we were planning on opening up some of the netting to get him out, he all of a sudden made a rush at the upper corner and got out! Hopefully he will have had his full of the close encounter witht he giant humans and not come back soon! Here is a picture of him when he got caught in the netting before he flew to the other side of the pen. Here is a picture and the link is to the video I shot after i gave him a good screaming at about coming around again!

Yes, we get everything through here from small killers like minks, to bears, but the hawks have caused more damage this year!

I know this is random, but I am from the south and I LOVE the accent you had in the video

! (if that was you)

We have a pair of red tails that nest across the road from our house. Every year we watch her teach her brood how to hunt mice in our hay field. I watch her like a hawk (lol), but she has never offered to bother my chickens. I have never seen one as close up as it was in your video.. Very pretty animal. We have been lucky up until a few weeks ago.. I walked outside to feed my silkies when I noticed something in their pen.. It was an American Kestrel hawk.. It had just made the kill when it saw me and flipped it's lid trying to get away.. which it did. Good thing for him. I was looking for a stick!!!

We've had a big red tail around lately so we're trying to keep our eye out for him and go out often to check on the girls - read somewhere that hawks notice when there is human activity and tend to shy away from those areas. BUT the biggest threat today is a human one. Today is opening day of deer season and we're not taking any chances - the girls are confined to their run untill all the hoopla dies down - too much noise and potential harm from bored hunters. Our property is posted but better safe than sorry...

looks like you have to repair some netting. I think a red tail got one of my litte hens last week, they've been flying through daily. sorry about your roo:(

Oh gosh how beautiful he is! Such beautiful KILLERS!! We had this problem a couple months ago. We had left the door to a small hen's cage open and a little hawk decided to attempt the eat her! He flew into the pen diving down right on her. .. My dad and I ran out of the house, thinking the hen was already the hawks dinner, but she lived. He didn't even mess her feathers up! Me and my brother, and parents caught him, and the next day my dad took him and let him go FAR away from our house.
