Hi guys,

A bunch of folks and I have discussed porous eggs for a while now. Some try them- some toss them when they arrive from shipping-some get angry at buyer atc...

SO what I decided to do was try an experiment!

I had been collecting my BLRW eggs for a few days for an order of 12+. Well They stopped laying after I collected the 7th egg-nothing-not one egg! Its been 4 weeks and still nothing, they went broody! Just this week they decided they werent broody anymore-but still no eggs

K-back on subject.
Well I left the 7 eggs on my counter by front door window-crispy cold right there-50-55 degrees. I hadnt touched them thinking anyday the hens would lay again. I gave up after a few days and just left the eggs there as they were looking porous-I was going to eat them but kept forgetting to grab them. As each day passed a new porous spot showed up. I am also looking at how long they sat to see what kind of hatch rates I will get. I have eggs in bator that are as fresh as some are from this ams eggs laid-1 week old- 2 weeks old and now 4 weeks old...Today I put them in bator with a ton of eggs I got in mail. Im hoping to get a few that might grow now?? Trying to disprove the porous eggs don't hatch stigma. I hatched out 3 BLRW eggs 5 weeks ago-all 3 were slightly porous. They now get oyster shells and many treats with added calcium to try and improve egg shells for when they start again. Even the eggs I got in the mail had porous eggs in the mixes so we will see how it all goes-I will re-post results on the first post to keep everyone updated on their progress or lack there of ... Thanks

OMG 2/4 eggs are growing!!!! I thought for sure I'd be chucking them all but nope 2 babies are floating around in them:) awesome so VERY porous and Very old 4 weeks sat out on counter near window-4 weeks old!!!

My AM eggs ( shipped and porous) alot are clear:-( no more than half butttt it is only day 6 so I kept them all seeing as I paid alot for them-Ill wait until day 12-14 to get rid of all clear ones

the 2 are still growing strong!!!! Im very surprised-truly I am-these eggs were very transparent looking but those little babies are doing great..You watch they'll be roos!

the two BLRW porous eggs are hatching 1 is pipped the other is zipping
so I guess that says something abotu porous eggs huh?? these eggs were over 4 weeks old sitting on my counter-3 weeks in bator and now they are hatching!!!! I say AWESOME!!!

My Wheaten Ameraucanas tend to be porous. They get scrambled eggs with the shell, and free choice oyster shell. I just checked on one Wheaten egg in my bator today. It was a quitter at about day 16.

This porous thing is something I have been wondering about. I have a cheapo bator, though, so I can't rule out my own errors just yet.

I'd like to see what other people experience.

thanks Amy--Im actually really excited about it as I have wanted to do it for a bit. I had shipped some BLRW eggs to someone and a few were porous-they didnt look bad when i shipped them at all but after watching the eggs sit on my counter-I noticed that the porousness got worse-so maybe the time I wrapped and had it shipped it got worse? IDK but I immediately put them on oyster shells. I have never had issues with porous eggs until the BLRW's. I especially didnt think it was a huge issue since I hatched chicks out of the same eggs-so we'll see. Not that Ill stop using oyster shells for them if I get good results because every little bit helps to create the best eggs to ship and hatch out. I would have used the experiment eggs sooner but bator has been full and took this as a perfect opportunity to try. Im not expecting a miracle at all on these as they are 4 week old:-( But you never know:)

Yah -I feed all my girls calcium loaded treats and such...so until it was mentioned to me I never thought twice about incubating them or shipping them ( not ones that were mega porous just a few little spots) but bought the shells anyway to help

Well even so, if they are porous eggs, they are 4 weeks old, so you kind of have 2 experiments going. If after 4 weeks they are still viable thats good to know too!
I just kind of did a little experiment myself. My cousin had some fertile eggs, she wanted me to hatch. Some were freshly laid others were in the fridge for a few days. So we had 3 fridge eggs. Out of that 1 never developed, a started and then quit, the last one is still going strong and due to hatch Feb 10th. Its really interesting.

As long as the porous egg only looses about as much as a regular egg would lose, there is no reason it would not hatch just fine. The issue of porous eggs not having a good hatch is because they tend to lose too much water if incubated at the same humidity as thick shelled eggs.

I've had bad luck with porous eggs - most for me will not hatch or quit early. That said, they have all been shipped eggs. Maybe shipping + porous is not a good mixture, but hatching 'home grown' eggs will work fine. Good experiment!

I have had porous eggs sent to me and have hatched them. But I don't really have enough experience or hatched enough to tell if they actually hatch worse than non-porous. I know some of them hatched, but wasn't really keeping track.
