Is medicated or non-medicated feed better? What exactly is medicated feed/ what are the benefits?
Thanks!

It is a (vaccination? I think) against Coccidiosis, that is its only benefit.

Personally I do non-medicated. I'm tired of everything being so over medicated, over vaccinated, over drugged and dosed, over prescribed. . .

Medicated feed helps keep chicks from catching cocci-something or other. Which is nasty and gives them bloody diarrhea. There are a whole lot of places in the nation (and world) where it is ever-present in the soil and chicks hatched and raised by hens get inocculated through contact with her feces. Hatchery chicks do not have that advantage, nor do those incubated and hatched at home. You usually feed it to chicks for eight weeks, and by the end of that time the chicks USUALLY have contact with the soil and the medicated feed has assisted with their developing resistance to it.

The medication is NOT an antibiotic. It handles it another way.

Sorry I cannot be more precise. But that's the gist of the issue.

I completely agree with you. Is there anything else I should do other then the basics to help my chicks be healthy or should I let them be all together?

If they're all from the same source, they're fine. If they're not, but they're all generally really young, they should still relatively be fine. Otherwise, for older birds, a good thing to do to prevent any issues is quarantine for newcomers, just in case they have something. In that time, check for signs.

Past that, just give them a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I too fought with this same question. I feed my big girls only organic feed, and organic vegetables as treats so I started my first hatch Christmas Eve on organic chick starter but after some advice I gave in and switched to medicated as cocci is prolific in GA and I didn't want to risk it. I feed them a 50lb bag and now they just finished that so i am back to the organic feed.

I also put vitamins and electrolytes from 'RoosterBooster' in my chicks water to make sure they are healthy.
