Where is the ordiance that states about the set up of wires for band radio? or is it ham radio?

Hubby has copper wires from tree to chimney of house as a set up, then another wire to a tree in front of house and he made a homemade vinyl pipe post on one end of the fence post. (meaning, that he put the plumber's pipe into a chain link post at the end of our property line. So he would have three "lines" branching out into one like a Y.

The city guy, bless his heart, has informed me that hubby needs to remove the line going out to the fence end of property because it was an "eye-sore" to several neighbors. It was rigged and braced by strings and ropes and chains (don't ask me why but he uses every available string he can get to anchor the post tight), tied down by foundation block and one string was attached to the bottom of our power box on its pipe(next to the house) on the side of our yard. Yes it WAS tacky and an eye sore to see that homemade rigging done like that. The city guy ask me to please take it down and have me to tell hubby that he needs to get a proper "tower" for the wires. Hubby is not going to like this one bit, he is a fanatic about band radios and he loves to listen to foreign stations, going as far as Austrailia and Japan. He does not have the set up to talk, just the little box of knobs and all that dials to receive radio waves for the news, etc. Realistic DX-440 is the name of the box.

We do have power lines on two sides of us, the back and the side.

However the city guy said the line going from the chimney to the tree out back is fine and not obstructing anything. But the front to chimney, well, the tree is owned by the city because it sits between the sidewalk and street. Neither the neighbor and I can cut the tree down if we wanted to.

So I took that eye sore post down. If the city guy find this eyesore posts or anything of that nature that the neighbors were complaining, then hubby will get written up and has 30 days and a $500 fine. So hubby better find something else while I get some ideas I can suggest to him.

I am afraid for those wires, if a lightening zap on a tree or wire, it might either just burn the wire or it would travel to the house, risking a fire hazard. I don't know enough.

The wires are copper, very thin, almost like one of those bird netting (for fruit trees), a bit thicker. Not a electrical wire tho.

So band radio folks your suggestions, advices and all that jazz!

I can take pictures if you want me to so you can see the general idea of what hubby is doing for his radio's receptions. Not sure of the cost of those type of towers. The spiral wires that supposed to be good, does only pick up the town's, not out of town or international radio.

The best advice is to do what the city wants. A simple long wire antenna should be sufficient for just listening. It does depend on what frequency he is tuning in as to how long and what the orientation of the antenna should be for pulling in those far away places. If he is really serious he should maybe get his Ham license and join the ARRL (they have a website). There are what is called stealth antennas that would not attract the attention of anyone. Even if he is not trying to talk to the far away places a Ham license would open up a whole new world of radio to him.

I had the antenna Nazis at my house complaining...I showed him my FCC Licenseand explaned I have a federal right to maintain an antenna for the sake of LICENSED radio communications and as long as I don't violate the local 30' height law (FAA-I live near an airport) I was well within my rights to have as many antennas as I like. He said, "Thank you" and left.

In order to avoid anymore hassels, (plus I like to experiment with antenna designs anyway) I made a two element (Dipole) antenna out of 26ga enamled wire and fishing line. It is absolutely impossible to see. I've had to rebuild it several times because I forgot it was there and break it carrying something tall around the yard.

I love it when ham operators know their rights and come across some zoning zealot. Hams are federally licensed and there are few restrictions that can be placed on their antennas or towers. FAA rules are one such restriction. A ham knowing their licensed rights can make a miserable experience for homeowners associations.

The ham license is cheap to get and hams love to help new hams get started.

Many antennas that you can make your self are not very expensive. the ARRL has a lot of information available for a price, of course, on building antennas. Since I'm not sure what you DH has in mind I don't know what his needs are, but the dipole suggested above by another person sounds like it could fill his need. And yes, some of the boughten antennas are expensive. I prefer to build my own. But, I live where the only restriction is to height. I'm not even close enough to an airport so, I could go 200' I think without it being a problem.

Well we are close about five blocks away from the hospital that have many daily runs with copters, emergency and all that.

He install copper wire tied in one part of the chimney all the way out to the tree, that it is tied down with an old window weight bell. Works well keeping it taunt. That was not the problem with the city official.

The problem is the other direction going out toward another street. Tying it to a power box pole, next to the house, another tie to a fence and another to a foundation block. Talk about an eyesore, that is LOL!

I know this wife does not like having wires all over the place in a very nice neighborhood. It's tacky if you ask me. And it breaks often, leaving me to wrap it all up so our six year old daughter don't start pulling on the wires like a church bell pull!

Anything to get reception for his DX radio box. He loves to listen to it before going to bed. Sometimes they do have announcements and music.

I LOVE IT when ANY American knows his rights well-enough to tell the "Zoning Zealots" where the "cookie crumbles".

Been there - Done that.

(Also spent 6 years on a City Planning Commission.)

Those "Zoning Zealots" are the closest things I've seen to "Totalitarian Dictators".

Give 'em "THE DICKENS" when you're in the right !!!

It helps protect us ALL from their "Self-Righteous" edicts....many of which are illegal.
