citrus is not good for chickens. I would avoid oranges in the future but continue with all of those other great fruits and vegies

How are Oranges "bad" for chickens?

I know people myself included that have feed Oranges/ Citrus for years with no problems.

Chris

I guess I don't know that is is bad because I have never heard Why it is bad, but every book I have read about chickens says that it is bad for chickens. I know they use orange peel in some chicken food. I was not attacking you, just concerned since so many references say it is dangerous.

I think it has to do with the acid in the fruit.

If it was the acid in the fruit I would think that the Citrus acid that is in electrolytes would be bad also or even ACV.

Chris

I have always heard that too. So grapefruit would fall in there too with the citrus. It does LOOK good though and those look like pretty happy chickens.

Raw potatoes are another thing you are not supposed to feed chickens and I know those are toxic; I think we had two hens die once from eating potato peels bf we knew they were poisonous, they got them out of the compost pile.

Ours just had a big snack of leftover spaghetti and meatballs...talk about pigging out.

Thank you for posting atht, i just realize dthat I throw old potatoes on top of my compost pile, which my chickens have access to. I am going to put chicken wire on top of the pile which will be easy since it is made with crates. Thank you for saving my chickens!
