Hypothetical situation based on conversations with a number of people who think our world is changing drastically for the worse-

If you were planning on moving your family out away from society and living off the grid, what sort of animals would you have on your farm? What would you make/utilize of from those animals?

Part B- consider that the participants have never really raised farm animals or processed animals before. How would that change your list?

In this hypothetical situation I would have....

Chickens to provide eggs and process as needed (can't be THAT hard to do).

Goats to chew down the grass in case I can't get gas for a mower. I guess I could eat them if I had to.

Pigs to till and fertilize the land for crops. They will eat just about anything so they could be walking garbage disposals. A pig would also provide a lot of meat.

Rabbits for meat (again

) and fur for blankets/clothing.

Remember the Donnor party?

I want lots of animals...big fat animals.
Big fat friends too...I want to be the little guy.

I agree that dual purpose chickens are a given. Goats will browse on rough forage and could live on very little feed in this part of the country so I think they would be a good idea. Rabbits are easy to raise, but if commercial feed wasn't in the stores... I dunno? Pigs are a great idea. Easy to feed, raise and process plus can salt or sugar cure the meat without refridgeration. Horses, mules, donkeys and such would be a drain unless useing them to plow the fields or work in some way. Fish are great if you have a pond. Cattle would be ok if you have large pastures with a way to put up hay for them.

Still thinking. Interesting thread.

Chickens, Ducks, Geese (meat, eggs and feathers for blankets, pillows and warmth, and also can use their waste for fertilizer, can also use them for weed/grass/pest control )
Pigs (meat )
Goats *must have* (meat and milk, butter , cheese, and if you get a hair breed, hair for spinning, also for yard weed/woods control)
Rabbits (meat and some have hair you can spin for clothes and blankets) can also use their waste for fertilizer
Quail.. (meat and eggs and feathers, they are ready to eat at a young age)
And if i have enough land.. Cows! ( meat and milk and hides...etc..)
