This is my 2nd hatch. I hatched 14 out of 16 just 9/10 days ago - all perfectly lovely chicks. There was a good day in between 1st and last to hatch and sure there was a lot of pecking and bullying going on, but they're all normal chickeny chicks.

WELL... today I hatched my 1st Ameraucana chick from a wonderful BYC'er. I have fretted over these eggs like crazy - a stinkin tornado came through and we lost power for over 24 hours and had to find a generator so I wouldn't lose these eggs - and to keep my sweet chickies warm. I really wasn't sure if they would make it and I was so excited when the first little one pipped last night and hatched this morning at about 5:30 am. This chick peeped its little head off all day long and I was so anxious for another to hatch - thinking that it was lonely and needed companionship. Luckily a 2nd finally hatched around 6 pm and I was so relieved until that darn 1st chick attacked the poor thing constantly. After an hour of its feathers being pecked out and covering the floor of the incubator I did what I swore to myself I wouldn't do and pulled the rotten chick out and stuck it in the brooder. I thought having more room and some food and things to peck at may have chilled it out, so when it started up with the nonstop alarm peeps that I was afraid would wake up my 2 babies I grabbed the 2nd chick and put it in there. And guess what??? The evil chick attacked it again! The poor thing was shaking and terrified and bright red from being pecked again. I kept thinking they would work it out and gave it a couple of hours, but it just didn't stop. So again, like an idiot, here I go and grab the poor thing and stick it back in the incubator. So now I've opened the incubator 3 times. And I swear I think I might kill this other chick. You can hear it throughout the entire 2 story house. There are feathers all over the place. It even seems to be plucking out its own feathers and pecking its own feet! What is wrong with this thing??? I AM NOT going to open the incubator again. Luckily, the thing holds humidity well - its the ReptiPro 5000 - but what do I do with this chick?? My husband suggested I put it in with the older chicks so they could teach it a lesson, but I dunno...

Any suggestions????? (Other than not to open the incubator. I know, I know!!!) Did I just hatch pure evil in cute fluffy chick form??? Is this going to be the worst chicken ever? Help!

I would not go as far as to cull it, it could be stressed from having recently hatched and maybe you could stick it in with the older ones to see how it does with them, you could also(if you have one) slide a glass or clear plastic panel into your brooder sectioning off a part for your demon chick but so that it can still see the others but not peck at them, i have heard of people doing this and the chick will feel lonely and sleep up against the glass trying to get close to the others, leave it confined for a few days and then try to reintroduce it. hope that helped!

Wow. Thats nuts!

I thought I had problems with newborns... mine were nothing like that! Are you equipped to perform chick lobotomies?

Oh goodie, I'm not crazy! It was alone overnight with just a warmed up soft burp cloth. Chick #2 now has 2 more buddies in the incubator and they are all doing well. The demon chick seems to be calm so far this morning. I have one more egg pipped and one egg that looked to have hit a blood vessel while zipping yesterday that I'm afraid didn't make it

and then my hatch is done. So I may give the evil one another shot, but if it starts up again I'll try seperating it in the same brooder with these guys. And SunnyCalifornia - I WISH I could! That sounds better than having to cull it!! I hope it chills out, I really don't want to cull it!!!! It is a cute little thing. Maybe the crazies are over.

Thanks to you all!

I remember reading this post and thought of it today. I just picked up 5 Americana pullets. One will not stop pecking the others nostrils. They are all red from being pecked. And not just a peck it grabs a hold of the nostrils and pulls. I'm curious how things turned out for you

Oh no! I did just like someone suggested and seperated it for a day. I gave it a little baby burp cloth so it had something to snuggle with and put the other 4 in with it until they were big enough to stick up for themselves. When I let it back with the others they kind of teamed up against him when he acted up. He still spends a lot of time apart from the others but there are no pecking issues anymore. That definitely chilled him out. Oh, and I hold him a lot and would pick him up when he started acting aggressive. I don't know what will happen as he gets older, but they're a week old now and doing well. How old are yours?? Good luck!!!!! Oh, and the others are the sweetest, calmest little chicks of them all! Funny that my sweetest and nastiest are both Ameraucanas!! Oh, one more thing - I put a little teddy bear in there and he stays under the bear A LOT! They have light 24 hrs which was making me crazy (the other group has the ceramic heat emitter) and I think that helped a lot, too.

Good luck!!!

My husband rigged up a divider so she can't get to the others but can see them. This is my first experience with chick day so I'm guessing they are all day old. I timed it so I have eggs in the incubator that should be hatching Friday so I'm hoping they will all get along. Thanks for the advice, I hope my chick does as well as yours adjusting. I have named her Attila. Hopeful she doesn't keep the attitude to match!

From my post above: My two were in with 12 other chicks for two days and would not stop shrieking. It was upsetting all the others, and me.

Culling is a general term and doesn't necessarily mean killing them - I took them back to the person I had gotten them from, and he put them in a separate box by the door marked "free" for any of his other customers to take home. It had to be a separate box for bio concerns. What we did still broke the biohazard rules so I don't recommend it.

They were of a kind I already had some of, and loved them. He said this was a batch from a different hatchery and were something of a problem.

I hope it works out well for your little chick. Maybe some extra good nutrition will help its nervous system calm down. Like adding some dried nutritional brewer's yeast to its food. Or liquid niacin like for ducks to help with their leg strength so they don't get straddle legs.
