In my quest to figure out if one of our australorps is a he, I am updating from my last thread. If you wanna get caught up/compare pics:

Mindy is about 11-12 weeks now. Is exhibiting either roo or dominant hen behavior. Being a newbie, I don't know which. She definitely roosts her sister at dusk, and runs to greet us regularly. She has more wattles than the other but nothing far and away bigger, I'd think by almost three months, the diff should be significant. No crowing yet, but I wouldn't expect that for another few weeks anyway. Neither is laying yet.

So here goes:

Mindy's face close up, the red in her comb isn't as glaring as other pics I've seen. But it is a little bigger than the other one's.

The tail: Does anyone see "hackle" or "saddle" feathers? I don't know what I'm looking for.

Overall shape shot: The other chicken is in the background, it's hard to differentiate, because they are both black, I hope you can see the difference.

Crossing my fingers it's a she. Jump in BYC folks!!! Whaddya think?

The pictures are kind of dark, so it's hard to say about the feathers but I'm guessing cockerel due to the size and color of the combs + it has some pretty good wattles growing. Sorry!

Hmmm....just got home from class. Not a lot of replies. Maybe this evening. Although that last post sorta mirrored my own doubt that I don't want to give voice to.

i don't know. Our Minorca looked like a boy up til the point she layed. She was supposed to be an australorp. Her comb is ginormous and flops over. It was quite a nail biter.

I keep Australorps also. I looked at your past pics and judging from these recent pictures, at 3 months old, she looks like a she to me. At that age, if it were a roo, the comb would be much more developed. And the legs don't seem to look like tree stumps. So I vote girl.

If the Aussies are a bit like the Orpingtons, they would develop later and we would all be sitting here trying to figure it out LOL!
