Do I have to vaccinate my chicks? If yes then how often? I am still new to this and full of stupid questions, but at least you guys cant look at me crazy like the man at the feed store.

Guess again:

Title 7, PART 205—NATIONAL ORGANIC PROGRAM
§ 205.238 Livestock health care practice standard.
(a) The producer must establish and maintain preventive livestock health care practices, including:
(6) Administration of vaccines and other veterinary biologics.

Preventive vaccines are allowed--if not required--at least in the US.

wow, that is so sad.
I thought if you were buying and paying more for the organic eggs in the store then they would be vax free. That is so messed up.
I'm so glad I can grew my own chicks vax free and have eggs vax free too.
Thank you for posting that.
wow.

Ok...well then I want mine raised *MY* definition of organically. I don't want them vaccinated. Thank you for clarifying. I will know not to buy those at the store any longer. Luckily we have a friend that gives us eggs from his farm and he does not vaccinate his chicks either.

Well I have bad luck I didn't vaccinate my dog, I was actually running late getting them done. My puppie died of parvo. I am that 1% that everything happens to, so I have to be safe then sorry. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't "have" to vaccinate them. Law wise I mean.

I don't believe there is a law, but the vet at one of the agricultural universities out here that I talked to "highly" recommended Marek's vaccine for them.

Don't know if that recommendation would hold true where you are, I am in SE PA.

Nope, you do not have to vaccinate the birds. You can vaccinate for Mericks and coccicodisis, but neither are required. I personally do not vaccinate for either. Mericks is not big in this area so the risk is low, and for cocci, they can develop a natural immunity to it over time. Just have to expose them to the soil early on. If you get chicks vaccinated for cocci, you can't feed medicated feed, as it will nullify the vaccine.

The medication in the feed, is a thiamine blocker which inhibits the growth of cocci in the digestive tract so that the birds can develop their immunities naturally.

Organic birds can be vaccinated for mericks and cocci, which is why the cocci vaccine was made in the first place, because the amprolium (medication) was not allowed in feed.

A vaccine does not always last forever, and isn't transmitted to eggs. If you got a polio vaccine when you were a kid, as many of us in the US have today, we don't give the immunity to our children, which is why they too have to be vaccinated.
