. I am new to chickens and my 4 BO's are only 6 weeks old. They are "hopefully" moving to an outdoor coop this weekend. Is there anything I can do to protect my new precious babies from these relentless blood suckers? Is there anything safe to apply to them, and put in the coop?

Here's my girls and with one of my children:

I don't think you have to worry about them, Mine love running after them and jumping to eat them up, and they are only 3- weeks old.

Mosquitoes can be a real concern as they spread illnesses, including fowl pox as well as various forms of encephalitis. Thoroughly spray the coop with a pesticide labeled for animal premises that is labeled to kill and/or repel mosquitoes. You may need to do this on a recurring basis during mosquito "season." Also consider covering the wire with insect screening.

Well Ive lernt something new....real vanilla extract huh? Worth a try, here in Fl when the rains get here, which will be soon we'll be swimming in them, so Im going to try it - thanks!
Oh and btw, that pic of your daughter is adorable, you should submit it to a chicken magazine, catolouge (??) or something, its wonderful!!

I'm glad you asked that question because I expect we will get a bunch of mosquitoes here too (just north of Grand Rapids). I suppose I will take the advise of Sonoran Silkies and find a spray at TSC. I think I have seen sprays with permethrin which is good for mites but I would have to check if it works on mosquitoes.

BTW, I looked at your BYC page and really enjoyed the photos. The whole family will continue to have fun with the buff orps as they grow up. I have found they are just as charming as adults!

I think I may need to pour a whole bottle of vanilla over my own head!!

We live a little West of the Okefenokee Swamp in the middle of all kind of tiny swamps... mosquito heaven!

Mine don't seem too interested in eating them and there are WAY too many anyway. I can only imagine what it would be like at night inside the coop when they are sleeping. That is when mosquitos are fully active. And my chickes would be sleeping them. Poor honeys.
