Question for "Eglu People"

I have found that when it comes to the eglu, folks are either totally into them or think they are the devil's creation (lol). If you are the latter no need to tell me how horrible and expensive they are! I have already decided to get one, I just don't know which one to get. I am a total newbie to chickens and I want to start small, maybe 3 standards and one or two banties. I'm leaning towards the cube as I want larger breeds and I just don't see how they will fit in the Go... but the cube is so expensive I really need to be sure. I guess what i'm asking is, if you were a newbie and wanted to get just a few chickens, which eglu would you get?? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm in two minds about the Eglu. It looks cool, just not sure if it's for me. (I do really like the bee haus though)

If you want to mix your standards and bantams, get at least two bantams, three if you can. One bantam on it's own may get picked on by the other larger hens. Your right though, it'll be a tight squeeze for even three standard hens in an Eglu Go. You would have to buy the Cube.

I like the cube and I want one, just can't seem to pull the trigger yet, they are pricey.
 
I can't for the life of me figure out why people buy them for that kind of money, yes they are cute and colorful, But they aren't big and you could buy a BIG shed for less, WAY less......Ive seen them and they are so small and not cozy, I guess I like wood and I feel like it's warmer in the really cold weather

If you have your heart set on the eglu then you definitely need the cube. I just checked it out on the website and that is probably the right size for the number of chickens you want. The only thing is, if you ever decide you want more, and there aren't very many of us on here that started with five and didn't end up with 15 a year down the road

, you won't have enough room to add any more. I'm not gonna run the eglu down because I think they are great for the cleaning aspect! But like you said, they are expensive. That is a local company but they buy them from a national distributor and I'm sure you could find one near you. But if you do stick with the eglu, good luck, and enjoy your chickens!

Lol. I can't say I haven't been warned about "chicken addiction"! Unfortunately I live in an area where there is no way I could have 15 chickens! Wish I could.

That red coop is gorgeous, but honestly when I look at the comparable wooden coops they don't have runs and the shipping costs are crazy. I'm gonna check it out, though...
 
Yeah, some of those companies that ship them out can cost a fortune. I have a shed form the company whose link I posted and they delivered it to me 48 miles away for free

But after looking through here at some other posts I can see the appeal of the eglu, specially if you are not able to build one. That's my problem , I have the skill, just no time! Again, Good luck and enjoy!

I like my eglu classic so much , I want a cube. So I would recommend a cube since you will be wanting one anyway.
 
I ordered the cube 2 wks ago. It was on backorder until July. That ended up being a good thing. My bf was ticked that I spent that much when the actual cube will only fit 6 or 7 large breed chickens. So I canceled the order and am paying someone to build me an 8x8 shed style coop that I am decorating like this

I got the windows shutters, flower boxes and all. And even paying the 2 guys to make it I won't even be spending $1000! And I can fit. 20-25 chickens in the coop. You will find it's hard to just have a few chickens. At least for me it was. I started off only wanting 3 or 4. The day I was buying chicks I got 4 then a few hrs later picked up 3 more(on Sat). This was while I was on vacation. I got home Sunday and Monday I went to a feed store for supplies and bought 3 more. They are now 5 wks old and I have 12 more chicks coming on Thursday:eek: I am hoping I don't regret it! lol Anyway, if you have the time or someone to make a coop than I would go that route. But the cube looks awesome and if I didn't have big breeds I might have stuck with it. Good luck.
