duckling seizure?

I have a duckling that is having some issues, it's around 5 weeks old and I bought it with some others at Atwoods. It seemed to be having a few problems early on, seemed like splayed legs, so I isolated it and worked around with it and it got better, then one day I went to check and it was on it's side with it's feet straight out and head turned back, I thought it was dead at first, but realized it was breathing and assumed it was dying, I got it to drink alittle water and in a few minutes it looked like nothing happened. Since then he's been growing and thriving and I assumed we were past this, until yesterday when I went out and found him in the same possition again, in a few minutes he was up but wobbly, and then back to normal. It looks like he's having a seizure to me, what do you think the problem might be?
 
If it had problems since it hatched it may have neurological issues that can't be corrected.

It could be a vitamin deficiency issue. Have you given it any poultry vitamins in its water?

What are you feeding it? Ducklings need gamebird starter. Medicated chick starter is toxic to them.
 
We have had a chick that had seizures and we gave it Polyvisol and it stopped having seizures. It could just be an immature neurological problem. Like newborns that are "twitchy" etc. Hopefully with some vitamins and some time it will outgrow it. But like MissPrissy says, it could have something wrong with it neurologically too. Good luck!!
 
Haviris, I had a runner duck has the same happening to him.. It got worse and had to put him down..

It could be : Riemerella Anatipestifer Infection
This bacterial disease of ducks is also known as Pasteurella Anatipestifer infection, infectious serositis and New Duck disease. Anatipestifer infection causes high mortality, weight loss and condemnation. In the acute form, listlessness, eye discharge and diarrhea are commonly seen. Ducks show incoordination, shaking of the head and twisted neck. Birds are commonly found on their backs, paddling their legs.

I had ducklings (Muscoveys) dying like crazy last year. I thought it was a disease but I looked into the feed and found that none had meat protien. Duck usually eat toads, lizards, stuff like that. I added pond fish food to the feed I mix and have never had any more die after that. They would have spasms or seizures and then go into a coma and die. Since the mad cow thing all feed manufactutors have removed any animal protein from their feed but I believe the ducks need some.

He's not getting medicated feed, he's on chick starter because he lives with chicks, the sack say's ducks to. He's not wobbly or anything any other time, he's completely normal acting except when he has these episodes, he was bought with 3 other ducklings and added to one I already had, they are all completely normal, it's just this one. I will try giving them some vitamins and switching their feed. I know it's possible there is just something wrong with this one and there is just nothing I can do, he's so normal otherwise.
 
I mix just a small amount, maybe 5 lbs to 100 lbs of feed. I mix flatted corn, whole wheat or barley, even oats, but always the corn and then another type of grain. In the winter I was mixing alfalfa pellets, or rabbit pellets, as they are smaller, in too so they were getting some green. The pond pellets I got have soybean meal, alfalfa meal and all sorts of good stuff too in it. I feed them duck/goose pellets or gamebird crumble for the first month, then switch them to the grains after that. You can even mix the grain and the pellets/crumblee together, I will sometimes do that for a while in the transition period. I raised about 50 muscvoys on this last year and had very good, low fat ducks when they were dressed out. The inspector hasn't seen ducks this good in a long time, so I'm going to do the same this year and see how they turn out. I must have lost a good 30 ducklings until I changed the diet, and since then I only lost one due to a neurologic problem.

What I did to make a custom rations was looked at all the feeds that I had avalible to me and also looked at one people were making themselves. The Storey Book on Ducks has a few recipes in the back, I used those as a basic recipe, but I could't get any type of animal protein here, not even blood/bone meal. Thats when I found the pond fish food.

Just keep an eye on your other ducks, incase it is not a nutrianul problem. It does sound like he has a neurological problem.
