Black Shouldered PeaHen, Swollen bags under eyes Question!

Hello, My name is Kassandra, I just acquired a black shouldered peahen yesturday. The women I got her from, didnt have time to take care of her. She said that it had a sinus infection and was giving it tylan powder in its water, but wasnt very routine with the treatment. I have tried to call all of the vets in my area and none of them treat peafowl.
This hen has big swollen bags under both eyes. it causes her eyes to be closed ever so slightly and they are watering alot. She doesnt have a runny nose. This bird is just over one year old.

I am just wondering if this has happened to anyone else with their birds? I have pictures I can put on here, hopefully i loaded them correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, that yellow speck on her face in the first picture is a piece of corn.
 
are the swollen areas hard and mushy, may need to drain them or if hard cut them out. I would try and get some baytril as I have always had good luck with that. If not definately get her on some Tylan 200. You are taking on a rough case but with enough care hopefully she can make a full recovery.
 
The spots are mainly hard. Do you think it sounds like a sinus issue or possibly Mycoplasmosis? I read a little bit about that, I just dont know that much. If I do the Tylan what dosage recomendations would you make? I am reading that some people inject straight into the sinus cavity. Would it cause any tissue damage there??

Wow poor thing. I hope she gets better. That link annalease posted is great. It has pictures of the whole process and I have it stored in my favorites in case I ever need it.
 
I picked up some Tylan 50 today along with some other things. I have some questions though (sorry if they seem odd), if the spots are hard, will they need to be cut out now? Before I cut anything should I see if I can withdrawl any puss from the cavities? If nothing comes out then proceed with getting the abcess out??

If injecting the Tylan into the cavity area, Do i do 1 cc per cavity since both are swollen? Or 1/2 cc per side?... Do i inject right into the swollen abcess?

I have treated dogs and cats, horses, and a few other critters but never had to treat a peafowl before, I just dont want to hurt her. I want to do everything right so that she gets better.
 
Hey, Just wanted to give an update. The peahen, (which is now named Betty White).. Is doing great. With some help form a few great people on here, I was able to be guided through the sergury procedures and performed them with ease.

MUST WARN<>>> IM GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT SOME GROSS STUFF.... AND LATER WILL LOAD SOME PICTURES.......

The first cut was the hardest part, I was afraid to hurt her, I took a deep breath and I made it in one smooth motion, and i only had to enlarge it a little bit, but I could tell that I had exposed the abcess.The first abcess popped right into my lap, with just a little pressure,...which was gross... After checking the cavity for anything else, I gave some tylan to help with infection....

Took a breather... and about 5 to 10 minutes later, finished up the other side of betty's face. She held still for the most part, I had her wrapped up in a towel. She would move her head around when I woudl be making a cut, but held still for everything else.

finished up with the second side, and whiped her clean gentle, I applied a little Iodine to help keep it clean also. When I turned her back into her little pen, she stood there for a minute and then walked around a bit.

Both of her eyes are clear and she can see now, Within the first few hours she still had a little bit of bleeding, It wasnt anything major, I think she was preening herself and would bump her wound and it woudl knock some blood out. They have healed over today and she is not bleeding anymore.

She is a lot more active now, She is interested in whats going on around us, and wants to peck my fingers when I show her where her water bowl is LOL...

I wanted to say thank you very much for all of the help, I appreciate it and Betty does as well....

I think its so funny to see her put her head under her and look at her feet. I crack up every time.....
I will load some pictures today, if my computer will cooperate.
