1) What type of bird , age and weight
Ameraucana: I think about a year old maybe 4 lbs, smaller of birds.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
5 days ago we discovered scabs around her eyes and face with some eye discharge. We separated her from flock and started to cleanse and disinfect with chlorohexdine wipe for pets and saline to prevent secondary infection. Eyes were a little swollen at first. but now scabs are better but eyes are almost swollen shut.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
5-6 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No, she was broody in the nest and I think the others were annoyed trying to kick her out.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Some chapped bleeding around eyes.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I thought it was fowl pox but now I’m not sure.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Henhouse reserve feed, oregano flakes, grubblies, garlic water. She’s eating well and I’ve given her some fruit and veggie scraps and she eats those too.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Seems mostly normal, not really different.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Saline cleanses and pet chlorohexidine wipes with skin soother around scabs. 1-2x a day
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I can’t find a local vet that will see her
looking for any help
Or advice.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
Posted 2 photos.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. The nest has Eaton padding and the run had wood shavings and pellets.
