I was having such a hard time finding good Russian Orloffs that I resorted to buying hatching eggs from another breeder. They were packaged well, no damage in shipping, were collected in a 3 day period, arrived within 2 days of being shipped and it was very mild weather, all good things. It was a good hen to rooster ratio so I don't think fertility will be a problem. How much luck has anyone had with shipped eggs actually hatching?

I've had both very good and very bad luck with shipped eggs. They're always a gamble. If I get a 30% hatch rate I'm happy.

Well 30% would be about another 4 Orloffs, as hard as quality ones are to find they would be a welcome addition to the breeding flock. I will candle them on Sunday and get a better idea. I'm just worried that I went to all this trouble and not have a single bird to show for it.

My 1st try was a 50% hatch rate, 2nd 0% due to x-rays, 3rd dont know yet but i have some that i can see that are fertile, but the eggs were handeled roughly.
50% is a good rate for shipped eggs.

Is there a BETTER way to ship? How about DHL? Anybody try them? I don't know, it just seems that if the US Postal Service isn't always doing the best job, maybe there is another option. Maybe it all runs through the same channels???

My 1st time hatch was out of 13 eggs, I got 10 babies. 2 were not viable. I will try them again, as my seller was the best!!! (bugladyleah) and I want to try a few other sellers on here too! UGH, I am addicted!!!

I have hatched nothing but shipped eggs with generally good results - at least 70% hatch rate or more.

Mine all were packed by talented packers who individually bubble wrapped each egg, then packed the eggs in a box with a lot of padding around the bunch of eggs to keep them from shifting around during shipping, air cell up.

I think packing is the key - along with a little luck that the PO just doesn't sit on the package or drop it, OR intentionally rough handle it.

The postal service is to ruff.. I got 2 packages of eggs today and in one there was 1 egg that went everywhere( hope it doesn't hurt them all...And the box looked like it went through a window on the top story of a big building). The sencond had 2 eggs broken. And these eggs were the best pack that I have every seen.

I have had batches of eggs show great fertility and not one chick hatched. I have also had shipped eggs do the opposite. It is always a guessing game on the shipped eggs.
