I thought "sex-link" just meant that you can tell the difference between the males and females.
Is it a breed unto itself?

It just means you can tell the sex by the feather colors at hatch.

A sex link is a crossbred bird.
Example: Rhode Island Red over a Barred Rock = Black sex link
You can tell the sex of them easily as day olds

Got it! Thanks!
SOmeone mentioned her "Black Sex-Links" and I didn't understand the reference.

I think there are some sex-links that breed true. I'm not sure, check out feathersite.

You can't breed sex link to sex link and end up with a true sex link chick. You end up with something new, just a mutt chicken.

I'm not aware of any "true-breeding" sex links, except having read an article in Practical Poultry about some having been developed last century. But as far as I'm aware, it was just done at a university and the birds aren't around anymore.

By the way, never google "Black Sex Link" without your search safe feature turned on.

Ha ha, greyfields! I wanted to figure out how to tell the sex of a baby chick a few weeks ago.
I thought there was some way to "show" which sex it was.
So I innocently googled "chick sex show"! Ha ha ha!
Quite a shocker.

Breeds or lines "pure breeding" for chicks sexable at hatch often are called autosexing. Breeds ending in 'bar' are autosexing, such as Legbar, Welbar, Rhodbar etc. The auto sexing in chickens is simply a combination of several genetic traits that make for very pale roosters and darker hens.
