How long are eggs good?

I looked through all the FAQ's and other post but I did not see anywhere that talked about how long eggs are good for eating. When do I have to go collect? Do I need to do it right after she lays one or can it be every few days? I have one hen laying in the house but the other uses a bush sometimes, so will the sun make them go bad faster? Then once I collect them how long are they good for in the refrigerator? Anything else I need to know about collecting and eating the eggs? I know it is a bunch of questions but I have had chickens for a while, but I got some new ones that actually lay eggs now. Thanks
 
I keep mine on the counter - the oldest I've eaten was around 3 weeks - it was fine.

Do the float in water test. Pop the egg in a jug of water, if it sinks its fine, if it floats - no good!

I would think they wouldn't survive being outside for "weeks"

We found an article (can't find it now) where the caged chickens at the factory's eggs are already a month old by the time they reach the store! And then they have a two-three week shelf date on them after that so we figure ours will be good for at least two months after laying...maybe longer if the bloom is still intact. I would collect every day just so they don't get broke.
 
LOL...I have tried to tell her to use the house but she just looks at me funny...lol. She will use it sometimes, but then she will quit. One time she quit and I could not find her new spot for a while, then I found it behind the shed under a lawnchair that was leaned up back there...lol. But that is only laying, she goes to the house to sleep and during the heat. It is like an easter egg hunt everyday sometimes...lol. I have been throwing away the ones that I did not know how long they had been there because the only way I knew to test was to open them and I do not want to open a rotten egg in the house! Thanks for all your help.
 
Have you tried putting one of her eggs in the nestbox? Maybe then she would use it. You could mark it with an X and just leave it for awhile til she uses the box regularly. Then you always know which one was your "bait" egg and know how long it has been in there. Just a thought. I just adopted chickens yesterday and after I found an egg on the roost board this morning, I moved it to the nest. There were five more eggs in the nest by the early afternoon. (with 7 layers) They learned quickly!
 
I had not thought of moving them, figured it was like wild birds who will not come back it you mess with the eggs. I will try it next time. Thanks
