I'm almost finished building the new coop and decided to use a ladder style roost this time. My DH already built ours, but it doesn't seem to be working very well for the chickens.
Can anyone show me your ladder style roost and give dimensions?

ok, i would get a picture, but you really dont need it. I took an old wooden ladder with the round steps, cut it to fit and put it against a wall and put nails to hold it, works great, and offers lots of roost space, i will get pictures tomorrow if you want them. And you can most likely find a ladder on craigslist or a garage sale

This is the current ladder style roost. It just seems hard for the chickens to go up and down on it. We made the rungs wide and flat. I don't know the dimensions, but I'm sure my DH has them written down and the plans he made.

are those boxes the nest boxes? I've read and talked to some people, that have said the nest boxes need to be lower than the roosts, because they will stay in the boxes instead. It's a height thing.
I know there is a thread about that somewhere. I will look for you.

Caran you are correct, nesting boxes need to be lower than roosts.
chickens need to wrap their feet around the "rungs". I would think it would be more comfortable to have "round" rungs for them.

I forgot to add that the pic is an old pic. The boxes have since been moved down to 18" from the ground.
As for the rungs; I read that flat ones were better because they could lay on their feet in the winter, lessening the chance of frostbite because the round ones leave their toes exposed. You think I should make the rungs round when I redo the rost ladder?

I'm not going to round my roosts because of the frostbite problem , it gets cold here.
They will probably use the roosts now that the boxes are lower

vwoods -- your coop is very pretty!

I'll have to show these posts to my DH and see what he can come up with.
