Can anyone suggest a good book on chicken breeding and genetics? I would like to understand the dominant/recessive genes and keeping good records of breedings.

Like what happens when the colors of silkies are mixed? Say a white roo bred to a buff hen? Or a partridge hen?

Thanks,
Cresty

Hey Cresty,
I dont have the name of a book for you, but here are links to a couple of good sites. The first has a great description of the modifiers of color and the second is more extensive and includes a Punnett Diagram for the inheritance of genes. I tried to use it to figure out how Metzer Farms makes their sex linked layer ducks, but it just gave me a headache, lol.

The only experiment that I have tried so far, was to cross a barred rock hen with a welsummer (red base) cockerel to produce sex linked off spring. The pullet offspring were all black with some bleed thru of gold on the heads. The males chicks all had the white dot on the head that is typical of barred rocks and developed barring as they feathered in. Easy to sex by color at hatch and at feathering. Unfortunately, they are only sex-linked, not auto-sexing, so they will not breed thru to the next generation.

I'd really like to figure out how to re-create the Cream Leg-bar, a breed that does not seem available here in the U.S. anymore, but everybody wants. They are partially barred, auto sexing, and lay tinted blue eggs. What more could you want in a layer? LOL

Good gravy! Thanks for the links, everyone. I have looked at them all. (and still know nothing--just not smart enough to figure it all out, apparently.) LOL
Can any of you, Diana or anyone else who can tackle it, give me any idea what will happen if I breed a Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster to a gold laced Wyandotte hen. ?? Thanks!
