I am so devestated and no one really understands why I'm crying over this. I came home and my seven babies were all dead. I call them babies but they were 7 weeks old and such a joy - 4 americaunas, a white faced black spanish, a white cochin and a buttercup.

I have been putting them outside every morning in a dog pen, surrounded by chicken wire outside the chain link (yeah, I know, but it made me feel a little better to have it) right beside the big coop, and brought them in at dusk, every night. I couldn't stand the thought of them being out at night yet.

I came home today and all of them were dead. A part of the chain link and the door were both torn up and they were all just laying there, no blood really that I could tell, just dead. I assume a neighbor dog, because anything else would have at least eaten some and I don't think something small (possum, coon) could have caused that damage.

I could scream!!!! I am so ticked off at myself and this darn DOG, whoever's it is!!! I called my neighbor, who stays at home (also has chickens) to see if she saw other dogs. She's not home. I have a massive headache and have called my husband about 4 times. I just wish he'd hurry up and get home to take care of them. I hate the thought of having to go up there and get them and bury them. I just can't. They were all laying in the doghouse, side by side. UGH.

Thanks for letting me share. I knew y'all would understand...

Awwww, I am soooo very sorry to hear about your babies. Of course we all understand. I would just be beside myself if I had to face that. Be on the lookout for whatever it was to come back. IT WILL! Do you have larger hens as well? ( right beside the big coop?) If so, be safe....and...get a pellet gun!!

aww!!! i'm so sorry!! I'd be crying too!! thats so horrible!! poor babies. it sounded like they were safe! must've been a smart/strong dog.

Thanks. I'm just so sad over this. I have no babies to bring in tonight. The garage is empty... ugh. I can't stand it. My husband joked that they would soon start following me out and in, like a mama chicken.

Thanks again. I guess we're going to invest in an electric fence. I do have bigger chickens in the coop, they didn't even TOUCH that chicken wire.

Oh thats so sad I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope your neighbor can tell you if she seen the dog that did it. That way you can let the owner know what happen.

Well, the neighbor just got home and we just found out the dog also killed hers, 15 of them!! So we went to the other neighbor's and thank goodness hers were okay. It was definitely a dog, I got hair and she had dog tracks all around hers. UGH! This is just horrible! What can we do!?!

You could call animal control and let them know what happen. They might be able to tell you what to do or look for. Can you tell what color the dog was by its hair? Do you have other neighbors that have a dog? I would ask around to see.

I am so sorry to hear about your babies. I have never lost any babies yet, that would really throw me over the edge. Losses are part of it but the little ones just don't deserve it. Like you said they weren't even dinner. Dogs are the worst. All of my losses are to dogs. I still don't know what happened to one of my sizzles. She dissappeared one day. No sign of a featherleft behind. I wish I could say something to cheer you up. I will be happy to send you some eggs if you want, just cover the postage.

If so, be safe....and...get a pellet gun!!

Ummm...
No pellet gun will stop a dog from returning.

I dealt with this issue recently myself. The dog killed all 7 of my babies too. I thought my run was secure-it wasn't as dog proof as I thought-it tore my gate apart. Found dog hair too and six were dead, the seventh was being chewed upon in a shrub in my yard. I KNOW that a dog will return again and again until there are no free chicken meals. I would be very concerned if you have children. Once a dog gets the taste of blood...

Also, if you or your children surprise the dog while it is caught in the act, it may very well turn aggressive to you-our incident did.

I would call animal control and see what can be done "humanely", but also by most county laws you have a right to protect your property, animals, and a right to enjoy your property without fear of an attack.

My local laws:
Animals at Large
It is unlawful for any owner or keeper of an animal other than a cat to willfully or negligently allow the animal to run at large on any public property or on any private property of another without permission of the property owner.

It is unlawful for your animal to:

Disturb the rights of, threaten the safety of, or damage a member of the general public or interfere with the ordinary use and enjoyment of their property.
Damage the property of anyone other than its owner, including turning over garbage containers or damaging gardens, flowers or vegetables, or repeated defecation upon the property of another.

Females in Heat
You must confine your female dog or cat, while in season, in a building or secure enclosure in such a manner that she cannot come into contact with another dog or cat or create a nuisance by attracting other animals.

Just food for thought-you can do some reasearch and locate your rights.
