Well all my peafowl and turkey have stop laying for the year. So before putting the incubator away.
Saw a road side sign for fresh eggs. Stop no one home,but it was self serve. Got 4 dozen eggs(brown&white) yes they were refrigerated eggs. 1.50 a dozen.

Just check the eggs after 7 days. 41 are forming only 7 clear eggs.
Now need to go back and see what kind of chicken they have. Hope they are pure,at least some hens are the same as the rooster.
May even surprize them with a batch of free chicks in 2 weeks.
Will see ,but if i get 25 chicks not bad for 6.00.

Heck I dont even know how old, for sure they have not been turned.
 
You know, I was just thinking the other day that I might do that with the eggs from a place around here that does the same thing - puts eggs out in coolers for people to buy on their way home. I want to check and see what breeds they have first, though. I have to be picky since I'm almost out of coop room!!!

I had someone here yesterday asking why 'eggs for hatching' are $12.00 a doz and 'table eggs' are $3.50.
The simple answer is always, "The $12.00 a doz eggs are 'SPECIAL' ", lol.

Well stop there again to day, no one home. 3 more dozen in the little frig. No I didnt buy them, chicken coop way in their back yard. So still dont know the breeds, any way they would make good layers.

No I am not keeping them. All I need are some OEG hens for setters.
 
After hatching one out, I think I'd just incubate all the time (all you enablers are responsible), but I'm way out of coop room until I put together some tractors or something in the spring. Good luck with your hatch. I'll be curious to see what you get.
 
Found out 3 pens of chicken,each with one rooster only one pen were rooster match the hens. RIR other had barred rock with mixed rooster.3rd mixed hens and rooster.
Guess the RIR will be pure,all other will be mixed.
 
I don't know if others do this, but here's how I select my hatching eggs:

First I look through them for obvious flaws, thick spots, funny shapes, thin spots, and of course, cracks. The worst of these go to my household supply of eggs, the others are set aside for further sorting.

Then I wait until dark, and candle the remaining eggs. The first time I did this I was amazed at the shell flaws it reveals. Some look perforated. Or have micro cracks you didn't see in normal light. Some have ends that light up almost like shining a light through frosted glass. (Not the air cell, but the small end. It will sometimes be very thin) I've seen some that have what looks like a perforated spiral the whole length of th egg. (That shows clearly how the egg rotates through the oviduct as the shell layers are deposited.)

I select only the eggs that have uniformly sound shells, with minimal "enlarged pores" or other faults. A couple a very small "clear spots" are ok. Since I began doing this, I have a lower rate of clear eggs that don't develop at all, and a MUCH lower rate of eggs breaking in the nests.

The eggs that don't pass the candle test go into the supply of eating eggs, the best ones for sale, the others for my own use. There may only be 3 or 4 out of a dozen that are truly suitable for hatching. Sure, some of those others would hatch, but the odds are improved with careful selection.

So my hatching eggs are special. I don't know if others do this, though. I'm sure some people do, but I'm also sure some just jack up the price of hatching eggs because they can.

I sell table eggs for $2.50 a dozen, hatching eggs for $5.00. I think that's a very fair price.

DancingBear: Isn't it interesting to really check out eggs with a good light? To me, they are one more of those really cool miracles that God and Mother Nature allow us to admire and benefit from!

Deerman: Surely someone will be around one day soon so you can find out what breed(s) they have. Of course, once they hatch you can post pics and find out what they are from all the chicken experts on here!!!
