When I first introduced myself last month, I wrote about the dog-kennel we turned into two coops. Somebody asked for pictures. We finally got a real (in other words: not my cellphone) camera this weekend, so I took a handful of pictures...
The front of the kennel from our yard...
There is a small fenced area betwixt the yard and the kennel. You can see the back of my compost piles.
Here's the fenced-in runs to the left of the kennel...
And my bigger compost pile.
And here's the front doors...
There's a roll-up garage door on both ends. The kennel originally had a bunch of 5x8 dog pens inside. We removed the common "wall" betwixt two pens to make the coops, and the spare fenced walls fit the doors perfectly, giving us tons of fresh air.
Here's the inside from the door...
Yes, I just finished cleaning. Above the blue bucket is the back of the nest boxes. The little purple tub on the garbage can was today's treat... Bargin bin cottage cheese.
Here's the layers' coop, with a few of our Buff Orps checking out what's going on...
I'm standing in what was the meat-birds' coop looking towards the front of the building. The dog doors to the outside runs are perfectly chicken-sized. I'm currently renovating the second coop with all the improvements I thought up while using the first coop. And, no, unfortunately, those aren't eggs in the boxes... We're still a few weeks away from eggs.
Here's the outside runs they get to tromp around in all day...
They've eaten everything they can reach, except the balsam fir seedlings. The runs were pretty impenetrable this spring. I'll knock down a few more golden rod every time I go in so they can finish them off. The dirt is pretty sandy, and they've excavated a few bathing pits throught the runs. We have black, plastic netting over the tops. The gate in the middle of the picture is chicken wired off, so nobody can get in or out. I made the door on the left.
This is Oddball, our Sicilian Buttercup cockerel...
He's just started crowing this week. He stands up on this perch and gives it his best, which isn't too much, yet.
Here's some BOs...
<Monty Python old lady voice>"No, I don't think I like this camera-thing. Not one bit! I mean, we can't eat it... Can we?"</MPolv>
