* I am a big fan of flax seed, and hemp seed for chickens. Especially flax for molting birds, or birds with trouble recovering feathers after molt or curling feathers, etc. And for people with weak nails, or high cholesterol, too.

I mix flax seed in my chickens feed and they love it. It can't possibly hurt them, that's for sure. Sometimes I remember to put it in MY cereal too.

You can get it at most health food stores and now most grocery stores carry it as well. Try to get the whole seeds and if you want them ground, grind right before you feed them so they get all the nutrients from them. They go rancid pretty fast otherwise.

I get mine from a seller on Ebay and have been extremely pleased with the quality and his price is cheaper than any I've found around here when I looked in the stores.

I mix flax seed in with my regular layer crumbles, along with some kelp meal. My chickens look very healthy and the eggs taste great. I have read that the seed needs to be fed whole because they will become rancid quickly if the seed coat is broken because of the high oil content. The increased omega-3s in the eggs makes them even healthier to eat.
 
I feed a little flax seed, sometimes I see the seeds in the droppings bleached to a pale yellow. I keep my seed in a plastic bag in the bottom drawer of my refrigerator. The seed is cheap here, grown in New Brunswick. When I think of it, I grind some in my coffee grinder and add to feed. Birds are glossy, active, making great eggs...
