I found a nest of Araucana and duck eggs in the duck house today. 16 eggs total - 4 duck eggs and 12 green eggs from one of my little Araucanas that just started laying. The Araucana roo and his two ladies pretty much live with the ducks and hang out with them all day long before returning to chicken coop at dark. She had been laying eggs all over the ground by their pool so I started gathering them and had several in bator before Gustav hit and knocked out our power for a week. They were all fertile and developing. Then suddenly last week, no more eggs on ground so I started trying to find a nest and found one in duck house under a wooden "sofa" that's in there - remains from a child's playhouse. There was a duck sitting on nest for a couple of days so I couldn't see into nest till today.

Anyway, look at this huge egg next to one of her other eggs. I put all the eggs in the bator and just candled this one and look - DOUBLE YOLK. I'm hoping for twins. I think the egg is big enough to support two especially since this bird is very small, rumpless and tufted. I can't believe she could even lay an egg this large - she just started laying three weeks ago at the age of 4 months. Of course I don't know how long it's been under the "sofa" in the duck house where I found it. One egg was crushed and a few look like they've gone bad when I candled them. I'm surprised to find duck eggs since my Mallard females aren't even four months old yet.

I'll keep everyone posted on the possible "birth" of twins.

I would *think* they would all be fraternal since they have their own yolk (placenta) and were not the result of the cells splitting

Fraternal. Each embryo is produced separately and is supported by its own yolk sac. If there were more than one Roo they could each also have a different sire.

wow that would be really unusual I know it can happen with cats and maybe even goats but I did not know about chickens.

I had been told double yolks that hatch are genrally conjoined twins.
A friend claims to have a double hatch but joined chicks at the head. it only lived a few hours.

truth or fiction, one never knows.
I will be interested to see what happens with this hatch.
EDT to fix spelling issues/

I recently hatched a few of Ruth's eggs, three eggs, one layed each day. All three chicks are different colors and I can tell how each one has a different daddy. Every roo has his way with Ruth. Before this I had not given much thought to "Who the Daddy" if there are several roos, of different breeds, all mating with a hen. I guess it just all gets mixed up in there (keeping it simple and kid friendly). But in the case of the Araucana, there is only one roo unless someone got to her, which is possible, but she keeps to the duck yard to avoid them. I'm not even sure which of the two Araucana females is laying the eggs - maybe both - but I've never caught either one.

This is going to be so cool to watch and see what develops. I'll keep everyone posted. I can clearly see two separate yolks - not joined that I can tell. I'm hoping the egg will be large enough for two if they do develop.

This adds a whole new dimension to "Bator Watch".
