Our Banty babies will be 6 weeks old tomorrow and we ran out of indoor space sooner than we expected. As luck would have it, we are not even close to having their run finished (on the Playhouse coop). McMurry Hatchery used to sell the Chick-N-Barns but no longer do so due to damage from shipping. However, you can special order them through Tractor Supply and that's what we did.

While putting the Barn and Yard together, DH came up with "I sure hope the Teacup Pterodactyls appreciate this" and the name has stuck.

That is really cool!!

I especially liked the step-by-step pics.

My feedstore has those "barns" available pre-built, but not as a kit -is there a big price difference? I think they wanted close to a hundred bucks for the pre-built ones, and while I think they're cute I can build something for much cheaper! Though if the kit were reasonable that would sure save me some planning time...

I really like the whole raised idea, should work out really well for your chickies (once they learn to sleep inside, lol)!

Cute, cute, CUTE!!! I want one!

Did you really order it from TSC? I looked in their catalog and couldn't find one. Can you give me the details so that I can ask my store about it? And...if you don't mind, how much was it?

Thank you!

Wendy...Thanks!!!

mlheran...we cheated and put this on our credit card. We would have probably been able to build something that cost us less but this was a "time is of the essence" and DH is working about 60 hours a week (Mon-Sat). Since they'd rather sleep out on the ground at this time, I just cover the end of run with a blanket to keep the drafts off of them and keep the red light on for them so they can see. Got me trained well, don't they???

lcountry...We located the Barn & Yard manufacturer (Ware Mfg Inc) and they let us know we could special order them thru TSC. The Barn is part # 01495, the Yard is part # 01496 from Ware.

Barn cost: 331.72
Yard cost: 165.50
Tax & Shipping: 51.16
Total cost: 575.88
Being able to put it together in a day: PRICELESS!!!

The lumber was already on hand for the other coop/run as was the 1/2" hardware cloth.

Dawn, I loved those pictures and your commentary! I especially loved that you kept making changes as you went, discovering mistakes and remedying them...my DH and are building our first coop and I'm glad to see we're not the only ones who keep adjusting and readjusting!

I am curious about your night-light; do they need some sort of light in the coop at night? My chicks are only a week old, so this is helpful stuff for me to know.

Hi Amy!

Glad you also enjoyed the pics! I think we'd get projects done quicker without all the pix but we like having them to look back on for future ventures.

Once we get the "Playhouse" run completed, most everyone will move over to it. We'll leave the 5 Silkies in the Townhouse until we build our next "tractor", which will be a bit bigger than the Townhouse. I love it whe we can do a project like this together!

As far as the night-light goes...it's probably more soothing to my seperation anxiety than it does anything for them. I always kept the red light on for them indoors so I figured it would be something that they would be familiar with in their new place. First time chick momma here so I've tried it all and am coming up with new ideas all the time!!!

It's contagious too...caught hubby having a talk with them earlier...

I also likes that this sits in the front yard, not too far from the computer room so I can see the babies from here!

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for the answer about the red night-light. I feel better now!

I know what you mean about the husband; I too have caught mine chatting with our one-week olds several times. He was VERY against chickens when I first started talking about all this, but lucky for me, he's a sucker for fluffy baby animals!!
