only the shadow knows.....
Ok here we go pictures of my girls. They are just about 10 weeks old and getting big. The black sex-links are bigger than the RIR's. I think they are at the top of the pecking order.

Only one of my chickens has an name and that's Tessy the "Headless Chicken". You think I'm kidding LOOK!!!

Actually she got mashed when she was little playing in the pine shavings. 2 of her sisters didn't make it. She does most of her walking in reverse as she looks between her legs as she goes.

Here's Tessy with some of the others. See no head!

Today we tried free-ranging. That was fun or so they thought so!!

And the "Headless Chicken" joins them!!

On a side note. I am sooooooo proud of my dog. She didn't eat them or try in anyway to hurt them. BUT I know that is because I was there. If I wasn't Tessy would be bodyless as well as headless and so would the others.

She can actually bring her head around so that her beak is even with her shoulders. She jumps up on her tiptoes and grabs food. She's got a buddy, my head sex-link, who knocks food off for her too. She's out there in the middle of everything. She just does most of it looking between her feet!

Wow- I read about a byc member having a blind chicken today, and now a headless chicken!!!

I am truly amazed at how animals get along in spite of their disabilities. And Tessa having a buddy that looks out for her...WOW again. That is just too neat!

I love hearing these types of things- about chickens, and animals in general, doing well in spite of hardships, especially right now when there seems to be so many predator posts.

I'd love to hear more about Tessa and her buddy as they grow up.

OOOOPS! I rearranged my photobucket and lost the links!

Just so everyone knows, Tessie does really have a head. It is her neck that is the problem. It was sooooo badly twisted and possibly broken when she was only a week old from scooting down into some deep pine bedding that the other chicks stepped on her and injured her neck. 2 of her sisters did the same thing and died. She can lift her head up to the point that her beak is level with ther shoulder but that is it. It is so much easier for her to keep her head on the ground and run backwards. Trust me she can RUN!!! She has zipped over my feet a few times trying to get to the treats I was tossing out.

On another side note, to those people who have emailed me on the side that didn't like the pictures of a "headless" chicken and thought that I was being cruel for not putting Tessy down and for letting her live for my own "amusement"

Thanks for reposting the pictures. She is obviously doing OK and happily living a healthy life.

Awww, I love Tessy. What a good lil girl. I'm sure she'll be a great hen.

I have a blind chicken and I've been told by others that I should have put her out of her "misery" when she was a baby (and I would have at first but I couldn't and DH couldn't either) but she is a surviver and she really can do everything all the others can do...well except see.

Don't worry about what others say, they aren't there to see how she's doing. And to me in the pictures she may look different but I think she's beautiful.
