I just got done watching Dirty Jobs and he was at McMurray Hatchery. I seen where the one guy was feather sexing day old chicks. If that is fairly accurate then I will have 1 roo and 2 pullets. Out of my new hatch from yesterday. Anyone else tried to feather sex your day olds chicks?

- feather sexing

I was looking at it this morning, if the link does not work just go to youtube and search "How to hatchery" & it should come up.....

Yea I was sad when I watched them sex the chicks by squeezing the poo out and then lobbing (tossing) them into a box. No wonder 6 of mine died during and shortly after shipping...

That was horrible. I do not ever want to eat store bought chicken again. I will also breed my own if I want more. I know that it is part of life but to watch it is so awful.

If the feather sexing is really 2 sets of feathers same size for roos and 2 sets of feathers differnt sizes for hens then HOORAY !!!!! my single baby is a hen.

Unfortunately chicken is pretty inexpensive, so I will probably buy it but not for awhile. At least not until I get that video out of my mind. It is hard enough living where I do beacuse it is called the chicken capital. Every day I pass at least one chicken truck taking chickens to slaughter. Some have their legs stuck in the crates while others have their heads stuck. Occasionally you will see some of them fall of the truck to their death. Some if they are lucky will not die from the fall but will either roam free or get picked up by a passing car.

The last time I got babies from McMurray I had 6 die and one had a twisted neck when I opened the box. I was upset because it couldn't stand or walk without falling down. It died the next day because it fell in the water and drowned. I guess it couldn't right itself after in fell in. Then I seen how they throw them around at birth and thought no wonder some die after you get them home.
