valentine hatchery does and i've heard good things about them:

Great looking birds, but promotion of Marans should be through egg color and I noticed their weren't pictures.

Here is a picture from Europe where the main judging criteria for this breed at shows is egg color.

Here are a picture of eggs from my Welsumer 's I purchased from Ideal, which makes them Industrial breed not show. Marans eggs should almost be a dark chocolate, Welsumers should be a dark red or mahogany. Point being , that if you are looking for dark eggs, the color of the above shown, (no disrespect intended), you could do as well and a lot less expensive with hatchery Welsumers from Ideal.

Here is a breeder in the states that has some very good color Maran eggs (my opinion) I have never purchased from him, and this is a picture from his site.

I contacted Valentine and he said his eggs are 9s and 10s on the American Marans Club color chart. He said the lightest ones were 7s and 8s. Impressive, considering the scale only goes up to 9

As you can imagine, I decided against a purchase at that point. Don't know anything about his birds, but he always emailed me right back when I had questions.

This is troubling to me; I've been on Bev's list for Black Copper Marans eggs for some time now, and the reason I've been okay with waiting is because I assumed they were very dark, since everyone refers to Bev's eggs and stock as being the best. Now I'm wondering if I should remove my name from her list. Hmmm.....

Now I'm more confused...I just checked the link that Pipermark had put in, and I recognize this person as stating he works with Bev and that their breed lines are developed together. How, then, are his eggs so much darker than hers? Frustrating.

I am the person who is purchasing Iona's flock, I am going to pick them up day after tomorrow. I will be happy to discuss eggs with anyone interested.

I won't know how much they are laying until I get them settled, and Iona was telling me some things about them you need to know if you want some eggs.

please email me or contact me through my web site. These are almost my first black coppers, though I do have other marans here (cuckoo and blues).

I hope to carry on Ionas excellent standards and keep breeding these birds for excellence in egg color and other maran features. (as I do with all of my birds)

What happened to the breeder above who works with Bev? I clicked on the link, but it's a dead end.
