Pro Pen-G?

my chicken has a large wound on her side/back and so i went to the feed store and got some penicillin but then relized i had bought PRO-PEN-G (penicillin G Procaine injectable) and i thought i had read somewhere that anything ending in caine was bad/toxic to chickens. it that correct or am i mixing this up with something else. is the pro-pen-g ok to give her? and if it is does anyone know the dosage for a 2 lb chicken?
 
It is okay to give Penicillin G Procaine to chickens. It's a different *caine.

I know this from experience, as I just had a very sick hen, dosed her for a week with Pen G Procaine, and now she is back in the coop doing fine.

To figure out the dosage, you need to know how many units per ml (cc) in your Pen G Procaine. You say you have to mix it? Mine came premixed.

it says on the bottle 300,000 units per ML, and it says the highest reccomended dosage is 3000 units per lb of body weight.
 
The normal dosing for Pen G Procaine is 3,000 units/lb of body weight. Does she already have an infection, or are you trying to prevent one? We used a much higher dose for my bird because she had a bad infection. If you are using the Pen G preventitively, then you might want to stick to the normal dose. For a 2 lb bird, that would be 6,000 units once a day.
 
That's the same Pen G Procaine that I used. 300,000 units/ml. To give your bird 6,000 units, you would need 0.02cc for a 2 lb bird. What size syringe do you have?
 
ok im not to good with math so 6,000 units would equal about 1/5 th of a ml right? are cc the same as ml?
 
1/5th of a ml (yes cc's are the same as mls) would be enough for a 20 lb bird at the recommended dosage. You don't want 0.2cc, but 0.02cc. Note the extra zero after the decimal.

what size syringe do you have? What is the smallest increment?
