I'm interested in building some quail pens. No more than probably 12 right now. I found some premade online but they are really pricey so I'm hoping I can do it myself.

Anybody built their own before and if so what did you use? I'm mentally challenged when it comes to building things so directions for dummies would be greatly appreciated. Pics would be great too! I have a couple rolls of 1/2 inch hardwire cloth thats 5' tall and 42' long would that work or should I go with smaller holes?

Thanks,
Brandy

How big are you looking to go? How many are you planning on having? We built our own avary (sp?) kind of thing for our quail it can comfortably hold maybe 45 to 50. harwear cloth should be perfectly fine. I've thought of several ways to build a different pen for our birds. You could do a hoop house then cover it in hardware cloth, you could build the basis of a skid building then surround it with the cloth. or if your only looking to build a pen for one or two you can use an adjusted bunny coop. Try this website. http://www.thatquailplace.com/index.htm Crystal

I visited an aviary the other day where they had their quail on wire and theirs were exactly like the ones Strombergs and Bracken Ranch use I beleive. They looked really small to me for a trio, I'd guess 8x10 like a shoe box. I never thought of rabbit breeding pens. I've got a few around here in rough shape but I could fix them up.

I've got five coturnix pair that are in a 4x8 run in my chicken coop that i would like back. I have 15 pair of buttons penned together that I would like to separate. I also have a pair of hungarian partride, two gamble trios, two valley trios a pair of mex speckled and am hoping that my brother will give me a couple pair of mearns but I'm doubting it.

Eventually I'd like to have at most 60 pairs. I figure if I can build banks similiar to the ones sold commercially I can just build and stack as the need arises.

I have before...it is really fairly simple. Here is a pic of a 5ft by 2ft pen.....all you need is the wire...cage clips...and some pliers.
Any questions feel free to ask.
I used half inch by one inch for the sides and top...and used half inch by half inch for the floor.

Hi, i have several of these i built out of scrap 1x3x10'S, they where crates of some kind i picked up at a local business.

The pens are 3'w x 3'H x 10'L
I also have small roosts in there for the butler quail and white bobwhite quail & chukars to roost on if they like.

Sides are made of chicken wire and the bottom is 1/2" coated mesh.

I also put wind breaks around the sides and back bottoms of the pens.
The wind always seems to blow from west to east here.

also removable front panels so i can clean under the pens when they need it...

Butler bobwhite pen pictured: notice i can close off section when breeding time comes.
this pen has 3 males and 6 hens in it. When breeding is done i let them cuvey for the winter months.

Brackenridge cages are intended for button quail only and pairs since button quail are monogamous. Trust me, those are mansions for a pair
