My free "mystery chick" was a bantam of some sort, I believe it was a Rose Comb Bantam, but unfortunately he/she did not make it.

We brought the little guy home and it wouldn't eat or drink, we tried feeding him sugar water and electrolytes but nothing seemed to work. He passed overnight. Other than that, there were no DOA babies and everyone is thriving! Way to go MMcM!

After all the excitement everybody was a little worn out, naptime!

From Murray McMurray Hatchery (my first time ordering chicks from them):

8 Buff Orpingtons
6 Black Australorps
1 Golden Laced Polish
1 Buff Laced Polish
1 Black Minorca
1 White Leghorn
1 "Araucana" (a.k.a an Easter Egger)
2 Salmon Faverolles

and...

4 White Silkie bantams!

Also MMcM's "free rare/exotic mystery chick", so 26 babies total. They should arrive March 21st-23rd, I'm so excited!

Time to get the brooder ready!

thats always fun. I love hacting my own chicks, but most of the time i just let a mama hen do all the work. Shes better at it anyway.

I always told myself that I only wanted brown egg laying breeds, but spending time on this forum seeing all the different egg colors hooked me into starting my own "rainbow egg laying" flock. I built this list myself, mostly out of personal preference towards these birds. I'm getting BW Ameraucanas towards the end of March and eventually some BC Marans (one day) to hopefully finish the color palate.

I'm hoping the colored eggs would sell great at my local farmer's market.

Plus, I wanted a few unique looking birds. What's better for that then Polish and Silkies!?

Probably polish. They both look cool, but i think silkies need a constant heat source and not to get very wet..
