do they know when lock down is? or should i close up where she is so she stays there? can she tell if the eggs are alive or not? also does she feel the embryos inside moving as they grow... does she know to keep with it???

Yes, they really do know.
If you pick up your broody to drink, poop & eat, don't for the last 3 days.
She'll pull out her breast feathers so that her skin is right on the eggs. She can feel them moving inside the shells & she's been clucking to them for days.
A good broody IS the hen that lays the golden egg.

Which is probably why my broody girl ended up with a bare chest

it looked like she had had none there in the first place!

My broody that hatched almost two weeks ago, stayed on the nest for the last few days and made a heck of a racket if I even tried to refresh her water or give her grain. But they sure enjoy that morning stretch outside with the other hens!! nervous nellie she is, the one I have now my "avatar" who is now sitting on 6 RIW's for me. A good mama to be.

Aha, that must be why my broody hasn't been off the nest to poop since Monday. I also noticed that she hadn't touched her food and wondered why. Today is Day 20.
Glad this question came up. Now I know not to disturb her during her "lock down".

Wait until that big poop comes:sick I bet she is just so literally relieved, but they are the best incubators that I have ever seen, there hatches are awesome, and make wonderful mama's and foster mama's!! Love my broodie's even when they peck the heck out of me:lau

Birds were hatching eggs thousands of years before this website appeared. While I doubt they understand BackYardChickens terminology they certainly know how to hatch eggs. Why would you assume they might not?

lol because this is my first time using the broody hen and she is my first ever hen shes only a year and a half old. so i want to make sure if i can help her in anyway i will because i want CHICKS AND DUCKLINGS!
