Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Do you have pics of your wheaten? How old is he?

He really does have a nice beard- but the girls picked the heck out of it when I first put him in with them.
He's about 1 year old. My fertility has been excellent- and no naked backed hens except one cochin- but that's due to the soft feathers they have. He's not agressive to people at all- just doesn't like my wellie roo very much.

Kind of looks like a silver to me, but since I've never seen a silver in person, I'll leave it to the experts...

I have silvers and they don't look like that. I don't see a beard or muffs, could be the picture quality though. Sorry, I'd say no, definitely not a variety I've seen.

pips&peeps :

Who was in contact with me about getting some more chicks shipped? The latest batch has hatched and there are extras. I need to be contacted by you today before 1:00 pm pacific time........

I am always a day late.

I just found this thread and, at 310 pages, I haven't begun to look through all of it...forgive me if this has already been discussed.

I hatched pure Ameraucana eggs from Cree Farm last spring--our first hatch ever. We only ended up with two splash roos, one splash hen, and one blue hen...not great, but enough to get us started. I would like to breed the Ameraucanas, but the two roos are really aggressive. I have one in with the two Ameraucana hens and the other with 5 FBC Marans hens. Can anyone tell me if this particular breed tends to be a more aggressive bird than others? Even the hens are not very "friendly", so I'm just curious if this is normal....I will probably still breed them, but I want to know if this is normal before I continue with these birds. I might want to get some from elsewhere....

Also, can anyone point me in the right direction for information on breeding? I need genetic type info. like at what point are you "inbreeding" with the father to the offspring, etc.

Thanks so much!!

This is my first time with this breed. Mine are still growing out. What I have noticed about them is that they are more stand-offish than my other breeds. I would not call them flighty (like White Faced Black Spanish I had) or aggressive yet, but they do certainly go the other way when I enter their pen or coop. My Ameraucanas came from a well known breeder, Paul Smith.

I have some fairly friendly ones, and others that move out of the way for me. My most dominant roo is only agressive in that he won't let any other roos by the girls. My "lesser roo" follows me into the house

The ones that I hatched are definitely the friendliest. Except for a little lav girl- she's the best.

My current batch of chicks are very flighty; act like I'm going to kill them. They live in my bathroom, but I don't spend much time holding them. I've heard that they are pretty calm as adults, and that the roos are very nice. My Barnies were super flighty as chicks, too, but now are very calm. I expect my Am's to calm down as they get older, too, from everything I've heard.
