I have this posted in the chick section as well, but I am in need of a little advice.

I have three 9 week old chicks that I will be putting with the flock tomorrow night. The flock consists of 1 RIR roo, 1 barred rock hen & 1 frizzle banty hen.

I've moved the "flock' into a temp pen in my garage directly next to the brooder with the chicks so they can get to know each other. I did that today. Tomorrow I will scrub the coop & then in the evening I plan to put them all together in the coop, & I will let them out in the morning.

I plan to have an area where the chicks can hide that the full sizers can't reach.

Now that I think about it, I should probably do that in the coop as well. If I do that they should be fine don't you think?

Am I crazy for mixing the flocks? As my Buff Orp. cockrel matures my RIR roo is history, but they are so small now, with so few birds I dont' think that will be a problem in the short term.

What do you think?

I believe you've done what you can.

One thought.... since you've moved them.... put the new chicks in the coop for the first several days and keep the older birds separate. Then when you return the older birds it is no longer "theirs".

Disrupting the natural order of things can be helpful. Also, some added distraction in generous quantities when you first introduce them (like some extra scratch or fresh greens) may help. Just watch them close at first and don't panic as the pecking order is established.
