Golf ball thief?

I had a couple golf balls in the nest so the girls knew where to put the eggs and never took them out. I go to get eggs the other day and a golf ball is gone. First thought is a egg thief but the girls are pretty consistant at one a day each. I have been short an egg each only about 3 or 4 times and just chalked it up to normal cycle of the girls but is the missing golf ball a sign I got a thief? Would one of the girls have moved it, starting to make a hidden nest? I dont remember running accross a question like this before.

Search the coop. They may have kicked it out. I know that my hens have done this with eggs. They didnt break, thank goodness but they werent in the nest. They also do this with my decoy eggs. If it isnt in the coop anywhere, then I would say that you could have a thief. I bet it was funny when they tried to eat it for breakfast!!!

Its a thief. Yesterday I lost 1 egg and 2 more golf balls. Hope whatever it was busted its teeth out.

*starts searching internet for how to make a poison egg*

I dont know at this point. I have read up on snakes eating eggs and it seems they only do it once because they cant pass them. Its only been a few days since the last missing golf balls so maybe it hasnt had trouble with that yet. It could be something else too, I dont know yet. I dont have a game cam or I would have that out to see what happening. I only lost one egg yesterday so unless whatever just left one egg in the nest, the thief took everything before the last egg was laid so it had to be midmorning (9-10am).

I dont know what else could take away 3 eggs (2 golf balls and 1 egg) without breaking a egg and making a mess unless the thief is downing them whole right in the coop.

I am gearing up for war but it seems all the good stuff is regulated by the EPA and DNR. Bummer.

I found one of the golf balls yesterday. It was on the front lawn. I mowed a week ago so it was placed there after that. Problem is, it had teeth marks in it...

Good news though, I found an few poisons not overly regulated so I may be able to make a loaded egg for the thief.

I was going to put my money on raccoon and then I thought of something. Between 9am and 10am suggests a rather amusing felon- a squirrel. Grey tree squirrels LOVE bird eggs, wouldn't upset your hens too much, and are certainly capable of stealing multiple "eggs" without leaving a trace. Could a squirrel be getting into the nestbox?

I have read about foxes stealing golf balls and hording them. Maybe that's what you've got?

Well not sure what the thief is but I popped a coon last night just after midnight. It was a very loud affair, no mistaking there was trouble in the coop. I compaired the teeth to the golf ball that got mauled and it seems reasonable. I cant blaim it all on coons yet but it seems reasonable at this point. I wont be giving up the hunt yet, in fact, it looks like it is just starting....
