Can this be salvaged?

New to the forum and new to the world of chickens. Hoping to get a few chickens this spring. I'm also hoping to fix up an old chicken coop that has been on our property for years (we've been using it for storage). It would be greatly appreciated if those of you who are knoweledgeable in the area of coops could help me decide if the coop can be fixed or if I should start over and either buy or build a new one.

Here is a view of the front.
It appears there is a cutout for where a door/ramp once was. A board has been screwed in across the bottom half of it. And obviously if I were to use this coop, that hole in the lower right hand corner would have to be fixed.

A view of the front again, and the area that would be turned into the run. Please excuse the mess. Been doing a bit of spring cleaning and things are a bit out of place outside.

A good sized walk through door. I believe that I would definitely need to modify this. The gap towards the bottom of the door concerns me greatly. I see a determined raccoon, or fox being able to get in.

The backside.

And a couple shots of the inside. All of that junk will be cleared out shortly, and I will take some better pictures.

I think it would be a very good coop. Nice size. The wood looks to be sturdy. Yes you'll have to patch some holes and add some wire to windows and generally make it rodent/predator safe but it's a great start!

I'm a beginner, too, but it looks like it has real possibilities. I agree it would need patched up where the holes are, and gaps would need to be dealt with- could you use hardware cloth? Have fun with it!

First thing I'd do is the roof. You've got major leakage there. I think I would redeck it and reroof with tin, for the nostalgic effect.

I'd love to have that project, best wishes!

Looks like it would be a great coop! Add new siding where the wood is rotted or missing, hardware cloth for the windows. In the late summer or fall, add shutters and maybe plexiglas for wintertime, depending on how cold your climate is. Nest boxes, and you're done. Don't worry about building a ton of nest boxes--I only have 5 for 29 hens, and two of those are the covered cat litter boxes set on the floor (don't put them under the roost!). Everyone takes turns and there are sometimes 8 or 10 eggs in one nest.

The easiest way to attach hardware cloth is with screws and fender washers. Much stronger than staples and easier to do. For the roof, that Ondura corrugated stuff that you can buy at Lowe's is what I used on two coops. It's not metal, but looks like it, and is cheaper. It comes in several colors.

Keep us posted on the progress. Add pictures!

It's framing looks good. It might need a new roof and if the siding is rotten you might need to replace that too, but let me tell you it's much easier to start from something. Check out my before and after on my page.
