Icelandic Chickens

Quote:
I though about a LGD before I got the donkey, but I was so scared about actually finding a trained one that would not eat my chickens. I know they exist, but they were trained with other chickens and by another owner, so how do you test them out on your own flock??

Sounded too risky to me.

There were 3 teens that came to tell us the chickens were being killed. The girl in the group lives about 1/2 mile away and has mini donkeys. I don't know if they have an extra but I may have to see just how tolerant Tom is of me expanding my menagerie.

I am so upset. Michael and I were sitting outside with the animals tonight when my stupid neighbor with the Jack Russell terriers came down the road walking them not on leashes. One tried to dig under the back of my chicken yard while the stupid old coot chatted with a neighbor driving by. Then the stupid idiot takes the terriers to my fence and begins petting my donkeys over the fence with the stupid mutts running around his legs. I have asked him not to do that. I explained that they are guard animals and I do not want them learning to be friendly to dogs. I want them to see dog on my property as prey. He still won't stop. I was videotaping my emus at the time so I just continued videotaping the dumbass doing what I asked him not to do and breaking the law by letting his dogs run loose.

He finally went home with his dogs and we felt safe going about our business. I went down with Michael to the barn to get the chickens I am shipping to Kathy. One of the other babies was roosting on the half wall so I picked him up like I do every night and put him on the roost. He must not have had a good footing because he fell off and hit the ground, injuring his leg. I am devastated. I feel so bad and so responsible. I can't stop crying. I am praying that he is ok tomorrow but I know in my heart he won't be.

I am in a constant state of worry and concern about the safety of my animals. I do not think I can take anymore of this and am beginning to wonder why I even thought I could live anywhere without the neighbors dogs being a constant threat. I will never understand why the rights of dogs outweigh the rights of people in so many people's minds. Right now I want to sell this place and moved to a high rise condo where animals of any kind are not allowed. I am just at the end of my rope. Each day I feel like the inevitable massacre is is going to happen.

Sorry to be such a downer but I just need to vent. DH does not understand the threat these animals pose and is hesitant to do anything that might upset a neighbor. I feel helpless at the hands of someone else's dogs...again.

Aww Mary. I understand how you feel. I have battled both wildlife and neighbors dogs/cats. Its a nightmare.
We have tried everything and it still seems like every day is new challenge. I am currently matching my wits against a killer fox and sadly am losing.

We actually had one neighbor threaten us for repeatedly having their PitBull picked up for killing chickens and running horses.
Our AC has a 3 strikes rule. Since the dog has been picked up twice, on the 3rd time they will euthanize him.
They came over and told us if we call the dog in again that something bad will happen to our own animals.

People are stupid...my neighbors and your old coot from down the road are a breed unto themselves.
You cant cure stupid.

I am so sorry for your troubles too. The wild animals I can understand. It is frustrating but I understand it. But when the biggest threat comes from animals that live in someone else house I don't understand.

Mary, any chance you could find a nice big mean doberman or similar dog that would enjoy a JRT for dinner, that you could take out for a walk not on a leash next time your neighbor goes for a walk? "Oops, did my dog do that?"

I loved this picture! All babies together.
Mary, I too live on 5 acres in the country. I am sad to hear your story, but can easily believe it, as many people I have met live in the country to do as they please, by golly. Not as community oriented and thoughtful as I remembered from my childhood growing up "out in the country" in Wisconsin, but whatchagonnado? I wouldn't trade back, as my land, gardens and animals give me great pleasure, as I can already tell yours do as well. And most of my neighbors are awesome. So, chin up! Resolve up! Electric terrier fencing up!

Isn't that the saying??

Or something like that...

)

Came home to find one of my SS laying hens on the wrong side of two fences screeching her head off to get back with the other hens, two laying boxes upended and eggs smashed, two adult hens in the juvenile pen with the juvenile 3 Splash Marans and 2 Icelandics, and the poor Icelandics hiding for dear life from the irate hens who were trapped in juvenile hall, the other one of the Icelandic juvenile roos out with the laying hens, and all hens squawking so loudly every neighbor in NorCal will probably be calling me tonight! What a ruckus and everyone so, so upset! Took 20 minutes to put all the goofiness to right, but everyone calmed down. Mess up their routine, and holy cow! (Called my mom in FL and told her the detailed version. She was laughing so hard I thought she might pee her pants...) I am laughing, too... now...

Bob, I was thinking almost the same thing. In light of recent events I hope I don't offend but I wanted to tell Mary I could send my chessie down long enough to eat the JRT's then you could put her back on the plane to Seattle.

Sick humor aside, how long till the emus are big enough to stomp a little dog? Are you allowed to protect your livestock? If so, the paintball gun might be good. Not really lethal but think of it this way, that's one heck of a hit for something as small as a jack russell. Just sayin... Maybe a bb gun loaded with rock salt. I've used that to deter some pests before. How about a really hot wire around the very base of the fence, again - sometimes size matters, a good shock to something that small...

If you were here I'd say just spray them with a nice aromatic rub, maybe a little honey and sesame seeds, bears will be waking up soon and they need a quick snack

Brooder updates:

Before the dog mishap yesterday I had taken my DD's out for haircuts and while we were gone Tom had been busy. He added a new roosting board in front of the nest boxes in the coop, and a new roosting bar in the upper half of the brooder. Then he added the new waterer to the brooder.

The brooder works great but the rowdy teens keep spilling their water making the bedding a smelly mess. So to circumvent that, he added a shelf and a bigger waterer. Now I don't have to refill them twice a day, no matter how hard they try they can't tip this over

Inside, they have a bowl that never gets empty, and it's high enough they can't fill it with shavings.

And here's Mr. Wonderful who helps with chicken chores and even doubles as a roost. He had 3 or 4 chicks on him when I turned around, I was too close so only one and a half show up in the picture.
