Hello all!

I have a RIR that we noticed was breathing really hard when we went to give them feed a few minutes ago. She has her beak open and trying really hard to breathe, and when I felt her throat I noticed it was lumpy. Sort of like our lymph nodes being swollen in our throat when we are sick but it does seem like a sore throat or blockage. Any ideas as to what it is or what to do about it? Thanks so much for your help

Husband stuck a straw down her throat and seemed to help get air in her lungs. Poor thing. We seperated her for a few hours to let her rest. Just doesn't seem like herself and she still has labored breathing. Don't want her sick for Easter

did u ever find out what this was? my hen is experiencing something similar?

kind of gross to do but if you're willing to save it like i would...you would have to feel the lump witch is the throat and lift it up thrower the mouth with your finger so you can see the yellow stuff thats blocking the air hole...use your nail i recommend to scratch it out..you'll hurt it but at least it wont die...do it couple times and it'll go away

Sounds like impacted crop which is feed lodged in the throat. The crop will feel tight and hard and can swell significantly to cut off wind pipe. Unfortunately a vet is needed. I would try to give some olive oil first.... But if the chicken is on deaths door and a vet is not an option I would flip it upside down and try to manually break up the mass and out the throat if it is really struggling to breath. Only 30 seconds at a time.... Only as an absolute last resort though.
