Oh they are not babies anymore. Lukka had her babies in a corner of the Icelandic coop on the floor. I needed to get into the nest box adjacent to where they were laying and check my broody for stolen eggs. Lukka and the babies freaked out and she flew up to the top roost. One by one the babies walked up the ramps to the pony wall and jumped right up with mama. It was the sweetest thing to watch. Lukka was all puffed up because I was taking pictures of her brood. She probably knew they'd end up on the internet!

I still think I have the obvious roo on the left but I think the rest are girls. The one to the far right has a bit more comb but I still think it's a girl. But I am usually wrong. I can live the dream for a couple of days because kelly is away from her computer.

Awwwww, just look at her! Lukka is "in her element," when she has babies!

I think at least 3 girls anyway. Not sure about that one on the end, but sure could be a girl!

ETA: And what a nice variety of colors you got there, too!

On closer inspection, that one on the right is more than a little suspicious. But I have 20 more babies in the layer yard with their mamas, and about forty eggs in the incubator. I'll be ok!

Honestly, when I look at some of my pictures.... I see things I did not even notice before! Like, where did that big red comb come from anyway?

What you see here is a het silver cockerel. Both red and silver (pheomelanin/groundcolors) express on the flight feathers next to the melanin.

Thank you Henk! You have been most helpful and are a true educator!

Mary Lukka has come through again !! To me she is the poster girl for the ideal Icelandic Hen !

and I am thinking as they develop that I have two who are going to look like her, and as blessings happen both are two of the tamest, along with the silver (Blue) who come to sit on my lap, or head , when I sit down with them. Not that the others arnt tame, even the roos come up now and will eat off a spoon(left over catfood) in my hand. Plus Blau and Isison bring the rest of the flock when I come out.

Interesting observation as I have been watching them the past severdays as they range out and about, their feed consumption has dropped in half, and , when I finally let them out this morn at 730 we had had a heavy T-storm with lightning, and after I let them out another cloudburst came, instead of running back to the chicken house they dove into the tall grass behind the house, then came out after, shook themselves and went about ranging. Instinct works well for them !! I can see in both of these why they were able to survive on remote Icelandic farms for so long.

Henk I appreciate your input big time, I am trying to get up to speed on poultry genetics, but the colors are brand new to me having had monochromatic chickens all of my life. Thanks for your input, and the others, I suspect you folks were/are game fanciers.

Life is good, and with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats better !

What a blessing Henk is stopping in!

I need to take pics of Dexter and see what he is!!!

Oh and unbelievably, Dexter, who was just hatched at Easter is looking like a success with the two girls that are laying.

Time for a test hatch next month...
