Common snapping turtle, nice! They can live several decades and grow up to 40 pounds. They bite like crazy if agitated, but are harmless if you don't put your hand or other appendage in front of their face. They'll go back to water if left alone, or can be steered with a broom. I don't suggest picking them up, you might get chomped. This might be a female looking for somewhere to lay eggs.
 
You would think she would get closer to the river, but i guess its not too far to the edge of our property. Just up a big hill!
